Hi everyone!

So when I saw the spoiler, I was especially excited about Cauldron Cookbook which I think is a very powerful card and an example of great and very fun design. I figured the best home for Cauldron Cookbook would be in a midrange deck that had a bunch of lifesteal units and I feel Stonescar Midrange has gotten a lot of traction in the new expansion with the release of Vara.

Here is the basic shell for my version of Stonescar Midrange with Cookbooks which I'll be testing, tuning and updating.

I'm trying 2 Last Chance over 2 Dark Return for now since the deck is very mana hungry and you want most of your mana up to activate Cookbooks anyway.

Feedback from testers would be much appreciated!

EDIT: My friend and teammate mgallop has played this deck to masters now and I've made a few modifications based on the feedback he gave and that of other tdc members. The one in cold blood is just a placeholder slot now since it's reasonably useful but we're not sure what to replace it with.

Blackhaven Eternal Version: 1.39
with presumably less valks and less temporal in the meta, I'm very excited for the prospects of this deck
ApesMa Eternal Version: 1.39
This deck is great. I'm having LOADS of fun with it and it's extremely rewarding to play. I've had medium success, and found the deck has a lot of turning points where the right play isn't straight forward, and that's exactly the kind of deck I like. To round it all off, Cookbook is so much fun, and it's my favourite faction pairing! I think I'll be playing and tweaking this for the foreseeable future - thanks for the good times Drifter!
Blackhaven Edited Eternal Version: 1.39
How important do you think the dark returns/last chances are? I'm really trying to squeeze some jawbones in here, haha
Drifter Eternal Version: 1.39
I don't think they're particularly important. They're a nice and versatile thing to have access to since they give you a lot of options on unit to redraw and they're quite powerful with Vara and Tyrant since both of them get stronger the second time but certainly a fine cut to make.
Hexadecagon Edited Eternal Version: 1.39
Hey Drifter, just starting to play the deck and it feels great so far. I was playing SS midrange before the new set and I found Cabal Tactic was fantastic in the deck. With all the deadly, quickdraw is powerful and lets your units attack safely. I'm playing 3 copies instead of shadow sigils.
I'm also wondering how good Jekk has been for you. In my experience he hasn't done much at all - I replaced him in the mainboard with two soulfires, but left him in the market.
Algarius Eternal Version: 1.39
I keep losing with this deck and it feels like it's my fault since the list looks solid. Any tips on hands to keep or when/what to market?
On paper it seems like it should murder time based decks, but I keep getting destroyed by Xenan.
Drifter Edited Eternal Version: 1.39
With every hand you keep, you should have a plan - whether that plan is as simple as t2 ripknife t3 chacha t4 vara or t2 cauldron t3 activate cauldron to hit a power or remove your opponent's first play with an annihilate, you should have one and you should evaluate how good this hand's plan is compared to the average hand's plan. Other than that, the deck is mostly about sequencing and holding your threats for the right time - Statuary Maiden especially is a card you should often hold for later because being able to go Statuary Maiden into kill spell and immediately get value is very strong. Often, it will be correct to use your cookbook rather than run out a Statuary Maiden on t4 and sometimes it will be correct to just pass the turn, especially if you don't have a 5 drop or they aren't pressuring you - as with every midrange deck, you don't want to overextend into Harsh Rule for example. Against the variants that run Dawnwalker especially, you want them to play their Dawnwalker so that you can immediately Statuary Maiden into torch it and get rid of it permanently.

As for the market, you generally want to get Flamestoker against control - it is a required merchant into attachment removal for control decks. You can get cookbook at any point where you're out of gas and have spare mana each turn to draw cards, you get bore when you need to kill their attachments, you get jekk when you can set up tribute or need a 7/7 deadly and you get the banner when you need to hit power drops. Do not be afraid to get the banner if it sets up your hand well. Additionally, remember that you can hold merchants until they're relevant - you do not need to run one out on t3 for the sake of playing it if you don't feel like you are the aggressor in the matchup. The longer you hold a merchant, the more information you'll have when you finally get a card out of the market.

Other than that, knowing when to use removal and to hold it is very important - don't throw away removal if you don't need to use it and remember that you can use cards like torch or annihilate at instant speed to blow out tricks and get 2 for 1s.

Really, I am mainly a draft player and I would recommend that in order to learn to play a deck like this, one plays draft - draft decks tend to play a lot like this one will play (though obviously you don't need to worry about overextending into Harsh Rule there :P)
Algarius Eternal Version: 1.39
Looking through my match history, I unfortunately have not won a single game with this deck. While a large part of that is probably user error with a dash of variance, I will note two things about the deck:
1. Jekk feels horrid without some way to reliably trigger tribute and
2. The deck only has 1 way to answer an azindel without somehow triggering Jekk or being grossly ahead.

All but 1 of the decks I faced have been azindel decks tho, so that might account for my track record.
Drifter Eternal Version: 1.39
If you feel like you're losing to Azindel specifically a lot, you can consider running a more aggressive build over the Cauldrons. I haven't really found out-aggroing the Azindel decks to be a huge problem so far but if you are struggling, cutting the Cauldrons, leaving just the one in the market and adding Shugo Standards main might help you. You could also shave down Jekks and add more removal or a card like Vicious Highwayman.

Also remember, you can torch or annihilate your own merchant or ripknife in order to enable jekk tribute and it will sometimes be correct to do so.
Kehnagos Eternal Version: 1.39
Might be too slow on top of your 4 crests, but what about 2-3 cabal standards to synergize with all your deadly dudes and dudettes? I've also been liking 2x Highwayman maindeck; granted I only have them since I don't have the full set of Tyrants
Drifter Eternal Version: 1.39
I considered Cabal Standard and I think there might be a different build out there with them but they don't go well in this deck I don't think - the 4 cookbooks and 4 jekks mean you are very power-hungry and you never really want to use Standard as a power, even past 5 mana.

Highwayman is a solid option but I don't think the meta is that aggro-oriented and it has a rough time attacking into big time units. If you're seeing mostly aggro or smaller midrange decks, Highwayman could do a lot of work for you!
Blackhaven Edited Eternal Version: 1.39
Deck feels like it has really good matchups against skycrag aggro, and feels very favored versus time-based unit decks (finally a decent answer to sword of unity?). The only question I have would be Temporal matchups. I've swapped the maindeck cookbooks for 3 jawbone greatswords and kept the one in the market.

Playing Vara with Maiden in play is just great.
Drifter Edited Eternal Version: 1.39
Hey Blackhaven, good to see you and thanks for the feedback! I just updated the list based on some feedback gallop (who has been playing the deck a lot) gave. I considered Jawsword and think that's certainly a fine option, I don't think I would cut Cauldron for it though (although I have trimmed them down to 2) since I think Cauldrons have been performing well. I could see maybe -the in cold blood, -1 tyrant or -1 annihilate something along those lines for 2 Jawswords. Also if you're running Jawswords, you could consider Smuggler's Stash in the market over the Cauldron and maybe have just 2 Cauldrons main or something.

How have you been finding Tyrant? Some of us at TDC have been liking it and some of us not as much.
Blackhaven Edited Eternal Version: 1.39
Tyrant is most likely the best threat for the deck at that power slot, so he's fine IMO, specially if you're trying to offset firebomb dmg. Why not run it? You're going up to 6 mana anyway, and your early game is covered pretty well.
