This deck is built around an interaction between
Vara, Fate-Touched,
Slumbering Stone, and
Xenan Initiation. Playing
Xenan Initiation on
Slumbering Stone, you can use its killer ability to sacrifice it into an opponent's unit, triggering its entomb ability to play a Vengeful Gargoyle. While
Vara, Fate-Touched is in play, this allows you to play the
Slumbering Stone again, refreshing its killer. In theory this combo can be used to spam the board with 2/2 flyers and kill all enemy units with 3 or more attack, or deadly. In practice, the combo can only be performed about 6 times before timing out in versus. In gauntlet this is not an issue.
The rest of the deck is meant to compliment the core combo, using
Sporefolk and
Grasping at Shadows to cheat out vara, as well as
Azindel, the Wayfinder to ramp into her.
Azindel, the Wayfinder also comes in handy when
Copper Conduit is in hand, and both
Dark Return and
Memory Dredger can return it from the void for even more value.
If needed,
Xenan Initiation can be used well with
Copper Conduit,
Dark Wisp,
Scorpion Wasp, and
Direfang Spider from
Torrent of Spiders. The reanimating potential of these cards allow the killer to get quite a bit of use.
Dark Wisp,
Devour, and
Scheme are mostly used to draw into the combo pieces.
Venomspine Hydra is a useful tool against go-wide decks and
Shadowlands Feaster is good against any kind of entomb, reanimator, or revenge decks.
