I went from Diamond II to Masters with this deck. I'm 14-6 my last 20 games of which 8 were Xenan Cultists (5-3). This is an aggro deck that can pressure Xenan Cultists before they can get their game plan together. It has decent life steal to race against Oni decks too. Hero of the People is a good turn 4 or 5 play with an exalted unit or Crownwatch Paladin. It's fairly budget friendly as well with only 3 legendaries (I don't have any Shen-ras and they don't work well with Hero either).

What do you look for in your opening hands?

Generally I am looking for a 1 and 2 drop, or several good 2 drops. Double justice influence is more important than time because of xulta loyalist. However, if I have hero in the opening hand, I want to play her on turn 4 with an exalted unit, or turn 5 with crownwatch paladin if possible. In this case, I will play any duplicate units or non-battle skill units on turns 1 through 3. The curve maxes at 3, so if all your units are 3 drops in your opening hand, I would mulligan.

Hero isn't necessary to win, it's just a different way to win. You only need 1 or 2 heroes to win anyways, and I want to reduce the chances of having multiple heroes in hand, which are basically dead cards by themselves. You can play an aggressive start and try to close out with pump spells and/or unblockable xulta loyalist without using heroes.

I tried it and it works really well for me. Some things are not so obvious - like that Hero gets +1/+1 also when she gets a combat skill through other means like a relic. Or the shenanigans you can make with killer / exalted.

What I really like is that the games are interesting and fun. The board looks often weak on my side, but due to the many tricks, it is not.

Yes, playing the tricks well is what really helps this deck win. There isn't any direct removal, so being able to chain killer on exalted units is huge, or ambushing with scorpion wasp with a hero in play to basically get a double ambush block.
