I always found Hero of the People to be a neat card to work around and finally settled at FJS factions to make it work (got me to Gold before New Year, but I don't play enough ranked to know the rank ceiling of this).
To make him work I decided I need to use Piercing Grief, as it gives lifesteal/charge/revenge and adds some needed resilience to my Heros. All other units somehow buff Hero to give him rest of what is needed:
Crownwatch Paladin - Aegis, Warcry Bartholo - Aegis, Unblockable Streetwise Informant - Endurance, Unblockable Inquisitor Makto - Flying, Revenge Icaria, the Liberator - jackpot
In flex spot I was trading different cards to see what gives and settled on 4x Tranquil Scholars. They can add nice skills to units on hand and allow for battleskills stacking on cheap creatures I keep for when my Hero survives a turn.
I wanted to build it like a toolbox deck (in MTG EDH I would usually play massively synergistic "answer everything" decks) with Steward of Past to stop graveyard hate, Bailiff to slow aggro and Valkyrie Enforcer for Silences, but ultimately kept only one copy of Valkyrie for occasional targeted Rise into Silence. I still think toolbox might be fun, but realized that I need to be more focused on my gameplan than prepare for everything.
Rise to the Challenge is our combo assembler. Quarry helps us setup power base and occasionally lowers cost of a unit which allows for more explosive plays sooner.
Dark Return/Seek Power/Protect/Torch/Slay are all good value cards that can help keep Hero running. Auric Runehammer as a Rise target (6/1 weapon kills most bombs I find).
P.S. Honorable mention for Stoneshaker (reduces cost of units in deck by 1). In ideal world it creates incredible value and allows me to swarm the deck, but those conditions don't come often and he's basically a 1/1 that doesn't have any battleskils. Still keeping it on my mind though.
