Got masters (currently rank 78) with almost exclusively this deck. On the right draw the deck is capable of beating anything. The basic gameplan is to curve into
Sediti, the Killing Steel with onslaught or
Korovyat Palace or
Amilli, Cloudmarshal from the market.
Our units don't have the size of ChaCha and ilk but we do have better disruption between
Valkyrie Enforcer for silence
Hooru Pacifier locking out weapons and
Poaching Drake downgrading most enemy units. Please note that
Hojan, Crownbreaker is actually a 3-drop, and you never want to play him on 2 if you have a combat trick in hand. Only play him on 2 if you haven't drawn a trick or a
Kothon, the Far-Watcher or holding up
Defiance is bad.
We're running
Rime Conclave Smuggler over
Winchest Merchant because the onslaught gives us a better unit, the face aegis stops opposing
Royal Decree,
Curse of Provocation etc. and the flexibility of accessing
Pristine Light and
Royal Decree in the same market is better imo than having 7 Palaces (Sediti wins more games than Palace honestly).
In our market we have
Swift Refusal for the control matchup to beat sweepers or big draw spells. I didn't meet much control during my climb though so this could be removed.
Royal Decree and
Pristine Light are the main reasons to even run the smuggler, so if you go with that they are must haves.
Amilli, Cloudmarshal was
Telut, Queen's Hand in some iterations of the deck with 2 Amilli 2 Aniyah main but I had a few Seditiless/Palaceless games where I drew smuggler but Telut was too late. Hence the swap.
Lightning Storm: the real flex card of the market. Sometimes it's
Crownwatch Standard but having the sweeper felt better than having the trick to save us from aggro and smuggler can usually block or eat removal from an aggro deck so it won't die in your own storm. Not having the power in the market means sometimes we miss Sediti on curve, so it has it's disadvantages. Feel free to try other things here too.
Notable omissions or additions to the deck:
Permafrost: don't have room. Defiance is better vs aggro and Vanquish is better vs fatties.
Aniyah, Arctic Sheriff: included for synergy with Palace and so Hojan tricks aren't exclusively the cost of playing Hojan, they have other targets. Can be a potential 3 for 1 (4/4 body, locks out opposing blocker, and opponent wastes removal to the renown).
Telut, Queen's Hand: having this somewhere to answer Rakano valks in games where Palace or Sediti fall short is important, but as explained before in the market it felt too clunky. At a 1 of the nombo with Telut and Pacifier isn't usually an issue and when needed the card is really powerful so I'm happy with it over Aniyah no. 4.
Edit:
Winchest Merchant in,
Rime Conclave Smuggler out: without the old Curse of Provocation, we need Palace on 6 as often as possible. This market would once have had Sediti instead of Amilli, but he isn't as reliable now, so Amilli makes it instead.
Permafrost in for
Defiance, which moves to the market: with merchant in we lose a few important things. An answer to aggro was one of them, and moving defiance to the market helps with that. Permafrost deals with more things, but it's important to keep in mind that it replaces defiance. Don't feel bad about permafrosting oni ronins and the like.
4th Kothon, the Far Watcher in for
Telut, Queen's Hand: we don't really want to hit 7 power anymore, and having more earlygame lets us win games where we get stuck on power or are on a clock (Diogo Combo). With Rakano Valks falling from grace, we don't need Telut anymore.
Swift Refusal in for the missing
Korovyat Palace: we need this somewhere in the deck to beat diogo and some control decks. Having the one is usually great, multiples suck. Hence there's one.
Powerbase changes: 2
Crownwatch Standard in for 1xSigil and the banner in the market: we want the extra lifesteal and we only have 4× 4 drops vs 12× 3 drops so playing depleted power on 4 is usually okay.
Edit: post trials of gordov I've changed up the list again:
Back to
Rime Conclave Smuggler: whenever we don't need to run copies 4-7 of a card (Palace) it doesn't make sense to run merchant and miss out on flexibility. Copies 4-7 of palace weren't enough, so here we are.
Sheriff Marley in for
Poaching Drake: the meta (at least my pocket) has slowed down since Trials, so Drake was hitting less and trading down more. Marley is just the kind of stabilising play we need on 4 and tribute and her "pay 4 to play a 1/1 aegis" both get use in the deck.
Icaria, Valkyrie Captain in for Kothon: a lot of other people had this change in already but I stuck with Kothon because he blocks better and the ramp wasn't too necessary. Post Trials, the metas slower and more punishing if you miss power. Hence Icaria.
3×
Strategize and 1×Aniyah in for Sediti which moves to the market: even with Icaria smoothing out our power, hitting Sediti on 5 reliably without topdecking well was tough for the deck, and often by the time he came down with onslaught I'd be completely out of gas and my opponent would be able to kill him and force damage through, so he goes into the market where I can get him when the Curse is good and strategize comes in to give us more gas.
The market is pretty much exactly the same as it was in my earlier Smuggler version with Sediti instead of Amilli, so no real need for discussion there.
(Sidenote-the powerbase for smuggler is usually 9× J sigil and 16× duals with Tactic in the market, and for merchant it's 8× J sigil 2× Tactic 15× dual, with banner in the market. Adding this because I know I'll be updating this list until Eternal is dead and I don't wanna write that out over and over).
It's fantastic, to the tune of a 63% winrate over 150ish games - which is increasing as I learn the deck/tune my cards/play against less random stuff and more top tier. I'm still playing with Rime Conclave Smuggler, but have subbed in big Svetya, Merciful Orene to the Market. That made me go with Shelterwing Rider in the main over Poaching Drake. I've only missed the transform a few times and Svetya hitting everything is amazing - she flat out wins long games if you can play her.
I also like little Icaria, Valkyrie Captain better than Kothon, but am absolutely willing to change that if I start seeing heaps more aggro.
EDIT: Forgot the biggest change I made! I went to 3 Shelterwings, Finest Hours, Vanquishes, and Valkyrie Enforcers to add in 4 Lingering Influence. I was often getting stuck on power when first playing the deck and this smooths out the draws so well! You can treat it as a single colour scry land if it's in your opening hand, and it's still draw a card, scry later. That has allowed me to not have a power in the Market as well.
Shelterwing isn't perfect and is in fact the first thing I'd cut to make changes. It hangs out as a threat to be withstand'ed after removal/vara, but really doesn't do much else, and requires PP quite early. I'm not completely happy with it, but neither was I with Poaching Drake dying to everything and not being J. I'm going to do some more work soon on what else to use, as it's definitely the weakest card in the deck. 4 cost flyers that include J and are playable are in short supply!
As for the Market, I'm currently on the following:
- Svetya
- Lightning Storm
- Royal Decree
- Pristine Light
- Crownwatch Standard
I've tried Gavel, 1 power counter magic, and weapons (until I realised my stupidity and the nonbo with Pacifier), but like this spread for now. I think the standard and Lightning Storm are the flex spots. I'm intrigued by the Winchest Merchant Market, but losing access to the Mono Primal cards is tough. I'll have to test it out!
The main reason I had for running the Smuggler was for Royal Decree + Pristine Light, and the flex spots were also Storm and Standard too so I agree 100% there.
Defiance is a decent option in a mono colour market vs aggro (which I'm not seeing much so might swap it out), so storm can be lost. I will admit that losing Decree was harsh at first but the extra Palace was worth it. However if you're not playing a Palace-based style then Smuggler might be the way to go-Decree makes sense there too, if only as a way to block their decree.
Oh, and I had a 15-game win streak in there, too!
