Welcome to a new brew series on Eternal Warcry where I shamelessly repost my deck creations.
The reason is very simple, I don't have anymore deck storage spaces on client so I decide to backup my interesting "enough" ideas on EWC.
Episode 1 : Hearty Sling Combo
Inspiration
The two main philosophies of my brewing are to "make good decks worse" and "make bad cards playable", where I aim to try new / interesting cards in already established archetypes, or try to build around a "bad" card that I like. As the old saying goes, "Playing two bad cards doesn't make them better." When two bad cards that have interesting synergies are played together, they usually end up extra bad when you don't have both of the pieces on. This time the bad cards to brew around with are
Hearty Feast and
Skycrag Insignia.
The bad cards
Why is
Hearty Feast bad?
Hearty Feast has to be one of the most standard examples of a card being "win-more", where if you can successfully play the card you are most likely already winning the game. In an intuitive build of Feast, it demands your deck to have enough of a unit density. However, the turn you expended on playing Feast is much better spent playing another threat to further close up the game. Apart from being "win-more", Feast also only leaves you with one power open into the opponent's turn, which makes protecting Feast (or your units) extremely hard or even impossible in some setups. You are also not guaranteed to draw into a unit the turn after you play Feast, which makes the card even slower.
Why is
Skycrag Insignia bad?
The only place you should play Insignia is in a dedicated Skycrag deck, and the power base is known to be extremely bad. Although we have received
Mark of the Grove and
Mark of the Den in Set 15, one of them is always going to be strictly worse than a sigil when playing influence heavy cards. The two influence heavy payoffs,
Jekk, Mercenary Hunter and
Kenna, Uncontained both require a ton of influence in opposite directions so it is pretty much impossible to run a consistent deck with both cards, especially if you want extra sigils for Jekk. In both cases, the marks are still only slightly better than the duals they replace hence making Skycrag remain in an awkward spot regarding power bases.
Deck Idea
I figured the best build around for
Hearty Feast would be cards that have "attack threshold" like
Sauropod Wrangler and
Veena's Masterpiece. The card I chose to pair with is
Sling of the Chi. When we play Feast for 4 power, our units drawn get a +3 attack buff, reaching the 6 attack required for the damage side of Sling. On the other hand, Feast giving Overwhelm also means the damage trigger of Sling also inherits the Overwhelm to deal face damage. Recruit also draws Sling triggers from your deck.
