Information

My FoA take on an old classic. Merchants make the deck very reliable as well as save you from holding an unplayable Shimmerpack in your hand the entire game. As a bonus, you only need one copy for the deck to work, making the deck incredibly cheap! Both merchants allow you to pull out your shimmerpack when you need it, and also allow you to set up your combo on turn 5. The basic combo is to play Dusk raider and then either merchant, to grab a Shimmerpack with berserk. On 8 power, you play shimmerpack and turn all your weak units into 4/4's with berserk. As long as just 3 go unblocked, you are dealing 24 damage and likely winning the game on the spot. Xenan obelisk helps with this plan, making it so that only 2 need to connect! You don't have to worry about never drawing the combo because with 7 merchants, you are all but guaranteed to hit it on curve. Even if you don't find one of your 3 Dusk raiders, Jennev merchant can pull one out of your market for you to set up the turn 5 combo.

Using the market so heavily does come with a few drawbacks. You will have to think carefully about what cards to trade in, as you will likely have to trade in 2 and the deck lacks card draw. I've thought about adding in some additional draw but the deck has been functioning fine so far without it.

Personally, I've found this new version of the deck to be incredibly reliable and usually completely unexpected. If you are looking for a budget deck to climb ladder, or want to try a new spicy version of an old deck, look no further! If you've read this far or decide to try it out, please leave some feedback for how you might improve it. Have fun out there and go berserk!

A crystalline chalice in the market for slower matchups would be really strong. I'd replace the sigil - I'm not a fan of sigils in the market, it's like getting a sigil with celestial omen. Your manabase also needs some work, clan standard is a super strong card and you definitely want 4 copies of the crest now that you're taking it out of the market. (By the way, I prefer banners in the market if you're going to have a sigil since if you're getting a sigil you're probably really light on power and need the undepleted source.) Finally, you really need a xenan obelisk in the market since that's your best card. Sandstorm scarf is kind of unnecessary since you have 4 marisen's disciples and 3 humbug swarms to gum up the skies (in addition to removal). Scarf is honestly a really bad card, so don't play it if you don't really need it. Finally, you want at least 3 scouting parties in the maindeck, since that's your only true card advantage. A few copies of Vault of the Praxis would also be good.

Few thoughts on this. Crystalline chalice would look pretty good except that after the first Obelisk it's pretty much useless. The deck aims to win outright on 8 power so I don't think chalice is the right direction. The crest in the market helps with mana screw, which can be a problem for every deck. It's a crest and not a banner because at 3-4 power (when you are going to be grabbing the crest instead of something else) there's usually nothing else to do with the 1-2 leftover mana banner would give you. Crest lets you scout and smooth out your draw when you need it. In a more aggressive deck it would of course make more sense for this to be a banner. Xenan Obelisk is definitely the single strongest card in the deck, but I don't like having one in the market as the deck already needs to usually grab 2 market cards and mixing in a third gets difficult. The crest and the scarf are decent emergency options as they both fix problems that are otherwise difficult to solve. Remember that the deck's main win condition is dropping a berserk shimmerpack on a board of 4-5 units, not necessarily using obelisk. While it is nice, it is not necessary. I had 3 scouting parties but cut it back because you rarely if ever use it for card draw. There are better ways to produce tokens, and that's what the deck really needs to set up for the lethal turn. The deck really revolves around having a merchant and dusk raider or 2 merchants and just staying alive until 8 power. If you can do that, it's pretty much won so a lot of these cards that are nice in traditional token decks (Vault of the Praxis, Obelisk, Scouting party) are outclassed by ramp and defensive cards in this deck. Even clan standard has some heavy drawbacks here. The clan tactic is nice when drawn, but in almost every case you'd rather have the undepleted power and giving less consistency for seats while putting more depleted power into the deck would slow down the early game a bit too much. I do agree that vault of the praxis can be nice in some matchups, and will probably be switching it out for crystallize for games where you can't build up a board.
