I wouldn't say "at the first opportunity," because you don't want to simply squander cards... But don't hold on to them waiting for "high value targets." That goes for Permas especially, but same idea goes for your Champions. Against Gauntlet, you usually win by taking control of the board then letting the AI run out of steam. If that means dropping a naked 5/5, then you do so.

I understand what you're saying re: 2nd Vara. However, if I recall correctly, I took that out because I really wanted to cram in 4x Permafrost. The last thing you want to do against Gauntlet decks is lose board control, because they can often snowball you pretty hard. So a fast removal / control suite was more important to me than late game power. You can usually win with just Champions and Stewies if you establish board control...
