First, huge shout out to Tinman for coming up with the idea “unitless” which this deck is based on.
Here’s the link to the original list: https://eternalwarcry.com/decks/details/vqBvaMA4XIU/toadal-justice
I have had a lot of success and fun with unitless control before the release of set 4, cuz the games you win goes long enough for you to enjoy the full control of the game. With a total of 10 board wipes and the card
Vision of Austerity (thanks Xelbie for trying out the sweet 1-of inclusion), it did well at farming praxis tokens, skycraggro, and AP mid. It got me rank 1 a couple times.
The coming of Set 4 is both a blessing and a curse for this deck. On one hand,
Cull the Deck brings its card draw ability to a much higher level, and the addition of
Crest of Order and Market mechanic makes the deck a lot more stable. But on the other hand, the opponent gets to throw away dead cards with their merchants, and annoying units such as
Teacher of Humility,
Kosul Battlemage and
Sheriff Marley were introduced. I’m now moving up and down between rank 30 and 100 with this deck. I don’t consider it as a tier 1 deck any more in set 4, but despite all my grumble, it’s still a viable cheap deck for ladder climbing and a fun one.
This deck is all about card advantage. Not only does it have all the best card draw spells and sweepers in the game, also the fact that you have no units which is equivalent to “At the start of a game you transform 10~20 non-power cards in the enemy deck into cards that do nothing”. (Well, it’s not true any more in set 4, but you play merchants just for the access to market, right?) The game plan is to take over the game by sheer card advantage.
With this in mind, we have the core part of the deck:
- 4 of
Cull the Deck,
- 4 of
Strategize,
- 4 of
Wisdom of the Elders,
- 4 of
Hailstorm,
- 4 of
Harsh Rule
- 4 of
Channel the Tempest.
I’d like to briefly discuss my choice of spot removals.
- 4 of
Slay, cheap and unconditional, having early interactions is vital for a deck with such a high curve.
- 4 of
Eilyn's Choice, same reason as slay plus it’s a counter spell, I’d say it’s a great card in general, though there is the down side of not being proactive, it fails to prevent units like
Tavrod, Auric Broker and
Mystic Ascendant from getting extra values.
- 3+1 of
Feeding Time, not a very good removal, 4 power is a lot and it’s not a fast spell. It could just be a bad
Slay a lot of the times, but you gonna have to run a few copies, cuz sometimes it really sucks without it.
- 3 of
Vara's Favor, it’s a card that can be easily underestimated. It pops unit/face aegis, it’s likely to cantrip as you can mark the sigil back with
Strategize and merchants, and it fixes your power in the early game.
- 0 of
Rindra's Choice, I tried it, but unfortunately it’s too narrow for a deck that needs to remove everything.
My take on the relic weapons (finishers after you clear the board):
- 2+1 of
Sword of the Sky King, all in all a great card, helps you stabilize by gaining you 8 life on summon, and kills an opposing aegis threat. Ends the game in 4 turns by itself, or 3 with a
Vara's Favor or
Channel the Tempest
Also I’d like to mention:
- Duelist’s blade, great at killing small aegis threats, falls short on killing midrange units, The complimentary face aegis is nice and it can put a relatively fast clock on the opponent. Not running it currently cuz
Vision of Austerity has taken the duty of killing relic weapons, but don’t forget to bring it in when aggressive aegis units are back in the meta
-
The Last Word, a cute card, it’s got a nice synergy with
Hailstorm and
Vara's Favor, I’m personally crazily excited about the meme of one-shoting your opponent, but man, if you’re planning on climbing up the ladder, all I can say is that
Sword of the Sky King is just a much better card
Relic removals and other meta specific cards:
- 1+1 of
Vision of Austerity, a great answer to relic weapons,
Xenan Obelisk,
Azindel's Gift,
Flamestoker, and makes
Crystalline Chalice,
Crown of Possibilities,
Mask of Torment,
Knucklebones players’ lives miserable.
- 2~3 of
Rain of Frogs, taking out threats from the opponent’s deck is a great path to victory for a grindy reactive deck. It’s pretty strong right now as everyone is playing big midrange/control decks, although it can’t affect cards in the opponent’s market. Adjust the number according to the meta curve.
I’d like to discuss:
-
Azindel's Gift, too expensive, and often times your opponent just gladly throws away a hand full of dead removals. Can be nice against
Crystalline Chalice and
Channel the Tempest decks, if one day they reclaim the dominanting position.
-
Annihilate, too narrow unless mono-time floods the ladder. If that’s the case, you gonna do what you have to. #nerf teacher
-
Devastating Setback, I used to run 2 copies in an aggro meta mostly as a
Lightning Storm, it was doing well. It’s not so great right now though, as there aren’t a lot of aggro decks around.
-
Extract, similar to setback, gains you life and pops face aegis, do consider it in an aggro meta
-
Celestial Omen, its place has been taken by merchants.
-
Lightning Strike, great against armory, which sees little play currently. Terrible at dealing with midrange threats (cuz you can’t use it in combination with others like
Hailstorm
-
Burglarize, one of my favourites in the new set, could make it in to market potentially, if armory decks and
Flamestokers are in the meta. The problem being that most of the times the stolen relic is useless for us, and 4 power is a lot.
Market option: I’m not running too many merchants (2 justice merchants and 2 primal merchants) because I draw through my deck very fast and always end up with multiple merchants in hand. I don’t want any of them to be potentially “dead” draws.
- (4 sources of)
Vision of Austerity, yes, you need basically “5 copies” of it to always have access in order to beat
Teacher of Humility, and opposing market cards such as
Flamestoker,
Azindel's Gift.
- (2 sources of)
Harsh Rule, I’ve tried other cute ones, but it turns out that you definitely need this one to save your butt.
- (2 sources of)
Feeding Time, a spot removal in primal in case you desperately need one, also deals with the 4th
Dawnwalker/
Inquisitor Makto
- (2 sources of)
Channel the Tempest, a card that you hate to see in the early game, but desperately need in the late game. Plus it’s safe in the market (dodges
Rain of Frogs)
- (2 sources of)
Sword of the Sky King, similar to
Channel the Tempest
Other possible market choices can be
Unseal,
Burglarize,
Azindel's Gift... according to the meta.
Thanks for listening to my thoughts in building this deck, hope you have a good time with it.
