This is an Argenport Midrange deck built using only commons, uncommons and the one of rares that you get from the starter decks. It is intended to be a good starting point to get a feel for the archetype. I will discuss the strengths of this budget version and at the end give possible upgrade paths for improving the deck as your collection grows.
This deck uses Xenan Cultist at the 3 drop slot, as we only have one copy of the immensely powerful Valkyrie Enforcer for now. The card is a decent blocker at 2/4, as well as having the ability to grow your units when they die. Why is this important? Well, we have Dark Return which allows us to recur increasingly bigger units. Lethrai Ranger + Dark Return allows you to infiltrate again for another +2/+2. Stonepowder Alchemist gets a boost from Cultist when it dies, and with revenge, it will come back into play keeping the stats boost. When it dies again, it keeps Destiny in the void so if you Dark Return it, it will play automatically (for free) and draw you a card.
For two drops we use Lethrai Ranger and Tranquil Scholar. Scholar can give your units some excellent skills, but even the ones that are less useful often add some value. Again, units keep stat buffs as well as skills across zones.
The other units are the one of hard hitting Impending Doom and Umbren Reaper and four of Minotaur Lighthoof which can help you sneak through damage, or infiltrate Lethrai Ranger. Three copies of Direwood Prowler help you reload your hand late game, as sacrificing a two drop that isn't affecting the board state is a small downside for two new cards.
The weakness of this deck is Silence, and cards like
Steward of the Past and
Statuary Maiden. We run three copies of Protect, which can stop Steward's summon and protect your void or protect a unit directly from silence or a kill spell. Because we don't yet have access to four Valkyrie Enforcers, I included two copies of Suffocate and one Annihilate to give you more outs to removing the above threats, as well as more efficient answers to aggro threats.
One of the major strengths of this archetype is very powerful removal. In addition to the spells listed above, we have three copies of Vanquish and four copies of Slay which help give you an edge in Midrange Mirrors.
Upgrade options:
The first thing you are going to want to do is get the Tale of Horus Traver Campaign. This will give you access to
Tavrod, Auric Broker and
Auric Interrogator which up the power level of the deck dramatically. Now that we have Tavrod, we are incentivized to play some weapons.
Auric Runehammer and
Bloodletter are some of the best.
For units, you will want to get four of
Valkyrie Enforcer and either four of
Impending Doom or
Steward of the Past, as there are advantages to both depending on the meta.
Argenport Instigator is the best Shadow two drop in the game so you want four copies as well.
Let me know if you have any questions!
4x Tavrod
4x Auric Interrogator
2x Bloodletter
2x Auric Runehammer
