Alright so I made a few changes and played a crazy number of games last night.
-2 seek power -1 wisdom -1 vara for +4 rindra
Market changes: -burglarize -harbinger +vara +(currently undecided but testing a grasping shadows for now, in cold blood will probabaly wind up here)
As for the power base I cut 4 primal sigils for clean standards, and banners for seals as you suggested.
Vara in market may be wierd, perhaps rindra makes more sense there. I decided to go with your "find vara as often as possible" and simply throwing her in the market to play her on curve after a merchant seemed like a good plan. It works so far but I'm sure there is a reason I never see similar decks out her in the market. Grasping shadows is a lot of fun basically acting as a 5th dark pact with the upside of it getting caiphus out for 2 power less.
So far it feels really good. It's hard to quantify how often my nightfall is giving my opponent answers, but I feel like overall it's worth the risk. On one hand you MAY give him an answer, on the other hand you ALWAYS have the additional threat and sometimes rindra just eats the answer for vara anyways.
In regards to the power base, I absolutely suck at building power bases so I'm not sure if the 4 standards/3 seals is right, I sort of just went all in on them and it hasn't been an issue so far.
Pulled about a 60% winrate through high gold/mid diamond, but didnt seem to queue into aggro much. Ended my night on netting a W against Locopojo playing TJS mask which felt pretty good! Highly recommend giving the changes a go, I feel like the reduction in "non-games" where I find all my removal and screams or get my only body silences is worth the potential downside.
I like the idea of Vara in the market. i run into way too many Skycrag aggro and going merchant into Vara sounds like a sweet deal to improve my matchup, which are about 50/50. I also think it's the wise choice to go down in total amount of power source, which will open 2 slots after removing seek power. I'll certainly try 3 Rindra there.
This deck is very similar to one I've been having a great deal of success with. One change I've done that I am wondering if you have tried is including rindra, I believe I have fit him by including less copies of wisdom of the elders. I find the list a little light on bodies and if you draw into all your removal/combo pieces without finding capihus or vara you are kind of up the creek. Having said that, here is my arguments for rindra:
Nightfall draws cards, hence why I feel like cutting draw to make room for him makes sense. We also have a ton of draw already between fanatic and strategize.
Synergies just as well with mirror images/scream.
Lifesteal seems super relevant as well.
Mostly he just seems to be a great body in a deck lacking bodies, and he fits the recursion theme.
Side note: how often do you find yourself picking azindel's gift? Was surprised to see it there.
Hello! There's a few reason why I didn't include Rindra mainboard. First of all, I realized Nightfall hurt me more than it helped. The removal that are affective against Vara/Caiphus are few, and the less chance my opponent have to draw them, the better I am. Also, using scream on Rindra feels much more worse than on a Vara, since she stays a 5/5. I can't count the number of game where I went from an empty board into going Scream + Mirror image and attack with 2 huge Vara, one of which will stay. I'll give you one thing though, Rindra could be better than Harbinger in the market. I would +1 Rindra, +1 Feeding Time and remove Burglarize and Harbinger.
I like drawing card, and more often than not the dead card in my hands are gonna be my removals, not my scream and return. Stratagize + merchant allow me to filter cards in a pinch.
The powerbase is not good. I had 2 Champion of Cunning before, hence the Seek Power, but I forgot to remove them. Since I removed this card, I would also remove the Banners and replace them with Diplomatic Seal, since I only need SSPP. Clan Standard might be good too, haven't tested yet. It would be handy with those pesky Rizan.
As for Azindel's Gift, it's one of my most important silver bullet. Any Fire Justice + other faction control deck backed by a cookbook have a lot of answers to my deck. When I play them, I play really slow, most of the time never playing Vara or Caiphus because of Statuary Maiden and other silence effects they might have. This cause them to get greedy, activate cookbook a ton, while I draw cards on my side and remove threats. Once I gift them, I just have to hope they don't have a fire merchant in hand. The matchup is still not easy, but it's the best I could manage.
Had to agree with azindels gift, running almost a similar built with mine splash with justice, card is very effective in mirror match and any control deck, sometimes its even decides the game in your favor right after you cast it
Thanks for the thoughtful reply. I can totally agree with the nightfall downside, so maybe rindra isnt the best option. Essentially I feel like this deck I'd lacking in bodies as I've had quite a few games where I dont seem to find vara/caiphus to get the train going, and rindra seemed like the "third best" minion to fit the deck. Do you feel like in an 80 card deck he would make the cut in your opinion? You have much more practice with the deck than I do, and I'm trying to decide if he is excluded due to lack of space or if you just feel like he is bad. I've been using him all along without a second guess so I was curious about your opinion. Thanks for the comment about the power base too, I was going to ask about it as well. I think seek+Vara choice is overkill but your explanation makes sense.
Lack of space was indeed my concern, I had trouble cutting down my deck to 75 cards. It would indeed be the third best recursion target for the deck, no doubt about it. I took the conscious decision to have card draw over more creature for the sake of casting Vara as often as possible. Is it the best/right decision, I don't know, but it's the fun one at least! Going more "aggro" would most likely be super viable too. I would personally cut 1 Wisdom, 1 Strategize, 1 Power and maybe 1 Caiphus or removal to make room for Rindra. If you try it, keep me up to date with your success!
ps.: One of the all-star of the deck is Devastating setback. I think the only matchup where I try to get rid of them is versus Combrei aggro/Big Time.
I agree on setback. My first attempt with this deck was more aggro with dusk raider for recurring flying berserk shenanigans, but I found too often I was too low on draw to find combo bits, or that I didnt find my lifesteal units in time to be rushed down. I think leaning a bit more controlling as you have is preferable!
