In my six* runs with this Elysian deck in the "Cookout" event, I lost 4 games. Total. That's a 36-4 record. One loss was to essentially the mirror. One was a game I drew 3 Firebombs against a deck that had 2 different ways to stop my life-gain. The other 2 were to Bandit Queen.
*
EDIT FOR CLARITY: My final run I went 3-2-drop, because I already had enough wins, and I lost two in a row. I didn't want to potentially tarnish the streak further, and I was done with the format.
Needless to say, I still feel this deck is EXTREMELY well placed for this meta. It doesn't care about aggro. It barely cares about control. (It has its own counters to make sure that opposing
Maul fizzles.)
Gameplan:
- if possible, drop
Teacher of Humility on 2, and bounce/perma whatever is in front of it.
- get to TTT quickly -->
Sand Warrior is an ALL-STAR. Free is so key in this format.
- Use your removal, especially Permafrost, liberally and early. You're drawing 2 cards a turn, so you'll find more. And if you don't, slowing those first turns from an aggro deck really neuters their explosiveness. You don't want them getting free (onslaught) 3/2s for 1 on turn 2.
- Later in the game, hold your
Equivocate for unforeseen threats or bombs, like
Cykalis, the Burning Sand, a suited-up
Brazen Daredevil, or even
Groundbreaker. They all do things this deck wants to answer immediately.
- Shift
Tamarys, Earthshaker against alllllll those grenadins. (Note: She also hits face.)
- don't be afraid to pull the Camel from the market, especially with
Auralian Merchant (who can't pull Maul).
- try to keep
Great Valley Smuggler to ONLY pull Maul. If the opponent is rushing you, adapt. If the opponent is playing Primal, maybe pull
Unseal instead, especially if they've already tapped their blue market.
- try to protect your Maul with a Backlash or Unseal.
- don't be afraid to Mulligan -- even down a card -- if your opening hand doesn't have an immediate impact. You want to see Teacher, or Sand Warrior, or Tamarys, or something to work toward.
Keep in mind, you can be an aggro deck. There's a reason why
Xenan Obelisk is in the market. Don't be afraid to rush once you get past their first wave of defenses. Sand Warrior, Teacher of Humility, and even Lunar Magus are ALL capable attackers in this format. 3/3+s are huge.
Also, don't be afraid to hold up extra mana a few turns running
before you run out your
Xumucan, the Surveyor. Have fun with it. No one ever sees him coming, and popping out extra 1/1s (3/3s with Obelisk usually) is an easy win.
With these general guidelines, I've easily earned all four copies of my alternate arts Light the Fuse. I wish you all the same luck. I'm done with the event!
My last run I went 3-2-drop, because I didn't like losing two in a row, and I was done with the format.
I was basically just pushing to see how far I could go and then help others get there too.
*Edited decklist comment to state that.
Credit be due though, the inclusion of Sand Warrior's was a good shout. I've also been crushing with a yellow/blue deck and I completely overlooked them.
Ambush just allows for SO MUCH flexibility, and of course Warp adds to that. Killing things to pop out extra blockers/attackers...
Xumucan is really just the best card for that slot.
Let me know how SST works out for you!
