Since
Shambling Sapsucker got buffed in the recent patch, I took transform-matters for a spin in the tail end of this Expedition format. Together with
Wildgrowth Druid, this deck can quickly stack transform buffs to turn these small 1-drops into huge threats.
Wump & Mizo is a huge threat on its own, and this plays extra copies with maindeck
Learned Imitators.
A couple notes:
- In addition to cards like
Polymorph, plunder also triggers the transform-matters cards.
- Transmute cards also give triggers, no matter where they are in your hand or deck (they should work in the market too, I haven't tested it yet). Whenever you play your 5th power you will always get a free transform trigger, unless you have already played both your
Clan Standards as power.
- You can build some monster
Little Seeds from
Fertile Soil, between Sapsuckers and
Root Rippers. Sometimes it is worth transforming one of your Little Seeds into a 3/3 with Root Ripper, to start attacking right away and get a Sapsucker buff on everything.
- Root Ripper is a great buff target for
Rage Grafter. Berserk lets it give it's attack-triggered buff twice, and the extra stats can help it survive to do so.
- While
Invasive Species can be an aggressive play that really benefits from Sapsucker buffs (the market copies keep the buffs), it can be awkward when you want to follow up with a Wump & Mizo. Playing it early should depend on the rest of your starting hand, sometimes it is better to hold Species to plunder or to market away (you can always bargain it back later).
Notable exclusions:
-
Matriarch Zende and
Reshape are likely both worth consideration. I just don't have any of either legendary right now and haven't been keen to craft them yet. While Zende's transform clause sounds great when it happens, I think this deck may want it more for turning a buffed mandrake into an evasive threat. Reshape could replace Polymorph - while the 'transform all' clause is unlikely to trigger with this deck's power configuration, it at least isn't completely shut off if the opponent has a
Sling of the Chi.
-
Glen Fasciata seems like a great fit, especially if you run Reshape or
Fluctuate Reality over Polymorph. I didn't include it because it takes a similar slot as Imitator and Ripper, which both seemed like a better fit with the current deck.
This can be a really fun deck, and can do some powerful things (Dazzling a Know Thy Enemy with 3x Sapsuckers and an Invasive Species out is a blast). It's definitely not a top tier deck as-is though, so don't expect this to push you into masters. Just have fun with it, and try not to queue into Sling :P
For me, this build focuses so much on primal influence (W&M is worth it), that Feral's TTT requirement is too rough. Could be more interesting in a more balanced influence build, or in something that can discard the Feral to get replayed for free.
