Edit: Red-Canyon Smuggler->Winchest Merchant has been a good change for me, it’s less fragile, protects Tomb better, usually a better hit for Icaria and Svetya.
Vara-Yes Vara + Aegis units is a big non-bo, but typically they aren’t out at the same time. Often Vara is removed before either Aegis unit comes down, and the upside against Kira decks, Aggro, and FAegis have been significant for my climb. Seems like ladder is pretty removal light right now as well since Reanimator and Kira decks don’t have much, so I’m often able to get away with it. Swapping Vara for Rolant would probably be fine although I haven’t tried it.
Keepsake-i was never a big fan of this card but wanted to try it in some shell. I’ve found that it’s not just about the ramp or smuggler, it’s the flexibility of being able to ramp when you need it, or dig for a Backbreaker/Svetya/Icaria that makes it strong. Cards like Lost Scroll are just abysmal draws later in the game and we really want to keep the gas flowing if possible. Most of the time if I’m playing this on T3-4 I’ll play a power. After that I’ll go for threats if my hand has enough power.
I've always found ramp to terrible in FJS. Ramping is horrible in control decks. Best thing about Lost Scroll was enabling the misers turn 4 Harsh Rule/Vaara against agrro. Keepsake is no better and cost even 1 more. Apart from ramp, I'd never play Scheme in my deck.
I completely understand where you are approaching this view from, I also disliked Keepsake. But this isn’t a control deck, it’s midrange strategy and you do want to curve out your powerful units ahead of time in some situations. In others, Keepsake is flexible in dumping a Mercahnt into play or digging for that critical threat that you still need. I think playing Lost Scroll to ramp into Harsh Rule is also a terrible plan.
