I'm a bit confused. Merchants are too expensive, but crests / nightmaw / vara / snowcrush are affordable?

If you have any merchants in your deck you can put 5 cards in the market. It's pretty common to put a lategame unit in the market as well as some removal and situational cards.

So for example you could have Snowcrush, Nightmaw, Haunting Scream, Permafrost, and Feeding Time in the market, and 4 Jennev Merchants in the main deck.
