Intro
Icaria is back, and she brought friends. This time she's got an Ixtun army of beaters ready to cut down any who won't rise up. This is gonna be good!
I'm not good at control or combo decks. My play is way too twitchy. Aggro is my game and this deck does that well.
I hit masters using Skycrag Aggro just before Icaria was tweaked, so like everyone else I tried jamming Icaria Blue and met mixed results. So I sat down and thought about my play style, how bummed I was that good aggro decks don't get much attention, and how much I wanted to play with everyone's favorite Valkyrie. Why not adapt her to a really aggressive list?
Thoughts on card choices
Champion of Fury is a stud. He's just good. He's even better coming down with Beserk thanks to
Dusk Raider. So why not buff him even further with
Unseen Commando? Why not give
Icaria, Valkyrie Captain berserk? Or
Crownwatch Paladin? The results are pretty impressive.
I added a removal package consisting of
Defiance,
Torch, and
Ice Bolt. Since so many creatures these days come down with big stats it's easier to remove them outright than force them into bad combat. Also, the fast removal lets you clear the board before your turn begins so you can swing at an undefended avatar. Oh, did I mention how great
Impatient Pyromage is for providing card advantage? And then there's
Ixtun Cargo, which is just good.
Icaria, the Liberator finishes the deck and is a blessing as a two of in this spot. Where most aggro decks tend to gas themselves by the time she drops, Icaria is that final play which can win you the game. Since I only run two copies because I don't want to draw her too early I have 4 copies of
Rise to the Challenge.
Obvious Unincludes
Since the deck curves so low,
Unseen Commando is the only 3 drop. The deck plays fast enough that it doesn't really need a market and cutting the commando from the list hobbles it a bit. You might be able to get away with cutting
Icaria, Valkyrie Captain or
Crownwatch Paladin and adding a merchant, though.
So have fun kicking in everyone's teeth with this deck. I know I do. The best part is that you can do it on the cheap. Suggestions are always welcome and please upvote.
