In every episode of my Eternal deck history video series I include a modern take on the historic archetype. Some of them will still be good, while others are in a much worse state thanks to nerfs or because they just received less support to keep up with powercreep compared to other decks.
This is the first list for my second episode, Skycrag Yetis. It is very close to the historical competitive version of the deck, especially the refined version that got several tops in the set 9 to set 11 throne formats. I do think it is weaker than the midrange hero version that I will upload simultaniously. The aggro version just got too many nerfs over the years, most importantly to Thudrock's Masterwork,
Pokpok, Rockpacker , Champion of Fury and
Blazing Salvo, while not really getting many new cards to make up for all those nerfs (Plunk Wumpkin being the one notably exception).
The deck still tries to do the same things as the older versions: Curve a 1-drop and a 2-drop into a board buff, or now also Calm Instructor, on turn 3 to quickly end games. But without Pokpok you will rarely get the explosive three Yetis on turn 2 starts (only if you draw three 1-cost Yetis) and with Masterwork at 4 power you will get the board buff on curve less consistently. So both of those changes hurt the explosivness of the deck significantly, which was one of the biggest selling points of it in the past.
For that reason, I can only give it a 4/10 at most. That means I would still call the deck playable because it can get quick wins against decks not prepared well enough for aggro and because the short game length helps to climb faster, but in the end it is just weaker than other aggro decks (like FTJ Project, Praxis or Stonescar) and not even the best tribal aggro deck anymore (Rakano Onis seem a lot better at this point).
