I wanted to build a deck around
Evacuation Plan. This is what sprouted from that idea.
Below are the various edits I made throughout the time I've been tinkering with this concept. Useless to say, deck changed completely since my first version, thanks to the comments left by the people who tried it and my time spent testing.
Edit:
Probs the last significant change I'm gonna make. Here's the new analysis on each card. EDIT 2: Nvm.
Justice Etchings: Great card, allows you to ramp and gives you a +1 with kira, along with cheap market access.
Pause for Reflection: It's like a bubble shield, cheap and efficient unit protection against many effects, protection that you need because you are a unit based deck. Allows you to abuse summon skills from desert marshal and reset the fame on ojan or the aegis on kira or fanatic. It goes +1 with kira, that most of the times is a +2, since you use it when opp committed a card to remove a threat, can slow early aggression and it can also bounce relics when needed. The three cost bounce restriction isn't really a burden, as normally only the chonk from eplan is affected, and under courier skill they also are bounceable. Insanely flexible card.
Working Together: Finally we get a good promo for this deck! Removes one, procs ojan's fame, draws from Kira, overall a very synergystic card for what we are trying to achieve.
Bubble Shield: Cheap protection, aegis is always good. Makes you plus with kiras, also the aegis is refreshed when your things go back to hand and you replay them. ALSO the chonk created from eplan retains aegis from shield if you used it on one of the things returned to hand, so you can basically completely neuter a board clear with it and eplan.
Silverblade Intrusion: The other "Kira" cheap spell. Protection, advantage and can proc 2 things. Often I used this in the early turns on ojan and something else to ramp and draw.
Desperate Courier: Insanely synergystic card for the deck. Plunder is a great keyword, and reducing the cost of your cards during you opp turn is invaluable, as it affects both your fast spell to protect your stuff (reducing the 1 cost spell to 0 is superb) and your ambush units. Words cannot describe how nice this card feels in this deck.
Hojan, Crownbreaker: Very good unit. It gives you survivability vs aggro thanks to life steal, ramps and overall has great synergy with the deck. You have your ways to defend this guy and it allows you to create massive bodies with evacuation plan, since it procs fame and his +2+2 lifesteal buff becomes permanent on the chonk sentinel.
Kira Ascending: What can I say? She slowly imposed herself as the soul of the deck. Great value, plenty of ways to defend her, gives endurance to our chonk if we use evacuation plan on her, but her most important ability is by far the draw when targeted. Great card, nothing else to say.
Desert Marshal: Insane value. Silence is always good, especially when we can bounce around this bloke over and over again to keep silencing stuff around. Cheap and great card. Can also allow you favourable trades thanks to ambush sometimes against aggro.
Combrei Lawmage: Good defensive body and a great way to limit our opp's plays. Opp tries to kill it with a spell? Give it aegis and bam, he's staying on the field for another turn baby. A reason why it is played in kira deck is that we have the tools to guarantee its longevity. It is also extremely good vs rebuild decks, so try to keep it alive at all costs in that matchup.
Unraveling Fanatic: I needed some card to gather resources when I lack my kiras. But this guy took so many slots and it required a lot of resources to protect, and when you failed the gamble most of the times it meant a game loss. That's why I had the idea of cutting it to 1 and make it a
Reweave target. This way it stays relatively protected, doesn't clog the deck and allows you for some nice tempo gathering plays. Overall your +1 is worth much more than opp' so don't worry much about giving them a draw, especially when you have lawmage on board. It basically becomes a separate wincon for more grindy matchups.
Hooru Envoy: It is worse kira, but surprise surprise kira is broken so he's great. Free cards are nice. That's it.
Pearl Abbey Smuggler:market acces to grab our good stuff. And since it's a unit you can abuse its summon multiple times with evac or pause.
(
Diana, Faith's Shield: Great card. Gives you life and a decent blocking body vs aggro and replaces itself, ulti almost never comes up but when it does it's really good.)
Evacuation Plan: The star of the show. You wanna boardwipe? What about no? Also what if I go +2 with my kiras, abuse another time the summon skill of my cards and put in a giant chonk with battle skills? Great card, it makes you feel safe, synergizes with lot of stuff in the deck and creates a threat. With the added bonus of being super fun to use.
(
Nahid's Distillation: Draws 3 cards, 4 with kira. Great way to refill hand vs longer matches.)
MARKET:
Pristine Light: Great card. board wipe, and if you return stuff with summon in hand it allows you to proc it again. A staple in all J markets since release, and for a reason.
Qirin Ascendant: Good battle skills, good summon, relatively cheap. Having some relic hate is always good, especially when we can abuse it multiple times by bouncing it around. Originally this was main decked, but I soon found out how a 1/3 for 3 mana that does nothing in some matchup isn't worth a slot in the main deck.
Endless Steps: This thing is a snowball machine. If you have envoy or kira on the board (or you just wait turn 5/6 to slap them both in the same turn) this card allows you to plus like crazy, every turn too. It also
works with ambush units that get the buff and endure is cool, ensuring you either get the kira draws or the ojan lifesteal, also when you get 8 j influence it helps kira swing, get the buff and survive. A suggestion with this card is to keep in mind the order you played your units and then target them from the latest to the more recent with evacuation plan. If you play this way the buff it gives by default will stack on each individual unit while they leave the field, giving your chonk +3/3 X times, where x is the number of unit. Useless to say, this is insane. I'd say the most important market card, but don't mindlessly grab it, as without kira or envoy it becomes quite meh.
(
Stand Together: great way to protect your board. This + evac makes sure EVERYTHING sticks, and with disruptive units like Lawmage on the board it can be devastating.)
(
Reweave: Tempo card: basically you slap your smuggler down, grab it and immediately reweave into an
Unraveling Fanatic (in matchups without board wipes ofc) you can additionally dlap a shifted lawmage for extra disruption. The possibilities for this card are almost endless, and for now I'm far from having exhausted every one of them. i expect some updates in the future.)
SIDEBOARD
Fearless Crescendo: Market access that works with kira. Giving your eplan sentinels flying is great, just be careful about using it on your opp's turn while courier is on the board, as it will discount cards in your market too, making most of them not grabbable. Only problem is that reweave is very good in the market and this card is not only quite inefficient mana wise, but also trash without kira. You can still use it don't get me wrong, but don't expect consistent results.
Geomar, the Steel Tempest: Great keywords and general synergy with the deck. This guy gives you plenty of survivability vs aggro, granting flying, lifesteal and endurance to the eplan chonk, while also being able to swing every turn. It is tho a very very bad topdeck vs control, and if you don't have the spells to support him it kinda falls flat.
EDIT: You can probably very well find space for 1
Steyer's Eyes, as void hate is great and life steal enables comebacks.
Alright, and that's about it! it was a nice journey. I won't lie, the first iterations of this deck were pure gargage, but little by little I managed to understand the deck better and tune it in a way I deem nice.
I don't dubt there is still plenty of room for improvement tho, so once again feels free to put down below your suggestion and thoughts!
MARKET SIDEBOARD
Equalize: Mostly an anti aggro card. We may struggle fighting wide boards without our hojan or intrusion, so this is the reset button. Be careful not to take mindlessly this card, as if you do that most likely it will become a brick in your hand.
Auric Herdward: Face aegis in some matchups is extremely helpful (like combrei with equalize or the newly popular tjs with subversion of nature), and it is yet another layer of protection for your units. Depending on the meta you can freely swap this and
Stand Together.
Edit:
Went 10-2 in the 2 factions event with the deck. Yay.
It’s rare to run out of gas, and can generally only happen if your initial hand + card draw screws you hard enough. The number of trick plays in this is nasty; even my best Hooru control deck would struggle a bit trying to outplay this, mostly coming down to who would get better card draw. Elysian Maul could work as a hard counter to this though.
I don’t think there are any significant weaknesses left, or at least not any that could be easily remedied without sacrificing too much. Combo aggro is probably the archetype this deck has the worst matchup with (think something like Jace7714‘s Infernus deck). This is proooobably close to being marked complete though, if it’s not finished already.
The changes to the market look interesting: Privilege of Nobility and Save the Day felt a bit too defensive in that the former breaks tempo to take a gamble on value, and the latter probably won’t be enough for you to recover if you really need it. Endless Steps and Turn Back Time do seem like they would be better. Svetya has won me games though; I don’t think I’ll end up liking Stand Together over her.
Changing market access to creating fliers lets you capitalize more on the deck’s strengths, but it will make your weaknesses harder to cover too. Namely, it’s going to give you worse matchups with spellcaster decks with loads of removal. With the old version I’m using, I’ve found you can 50/50 these decks into a late game topdeck win with Svetya, whereas the current version would just fail.
I’m also not completely sold on Field Medic over Icaria. I do respect the trick play capabilities it adds to the deck, but this is quite power and influence intensive for a two faction deck, and Icaria can help with fixing there on top of being a decent chonk from midgame onward.
Idk about losing vs spellcaster decks, but if they have plenty of removals, we also have plenty of protection. Also envoy is +1 even when opp targets it, so I'd say he should be the guy you focus on in those matchups. But maybe I disn't understand the deck you're talking about. Endless steps and turn back time are very great, sword is the one I'm not really sure about. I'll need further testing, but I'm 100% convinced on these two to be the better choice in the market.
Edit:
Apparently endless step is insane, and word of power didn't feel needed to close the games I'm winning out, as sword of unity on chonk usually does the job. Added another market access and 1 1 cost spell, bubble shield for now, but I'm tinkering between it and the other 2, I guess it will depend on personal preference
There really must be a difference in our playstyles though on the last market card: I really don't find myself playing Stand Together that often. Maybe it's because I view it more as a 6-cost finisher than a rather-expensive 4-cost unit buff? I might try to make myself use it a little more if I can.
Lure Away is a good market removal, but you have to only play Smugglers to consistently fetch it. Maeve may be too slow for this deck, but there are many other "usual suspects" for Combrei market - Stand together, Shen-Ra Speaks, Sword of Unity, etc.
Let me know what you will feel like the best build for the deck in this meta. Cheers!
I will test out Bubble Shield then I'll look at the results.
