I brewed some variation of this list a couple weeks ago. I was hopeful
Tavrod, Auric Broker would be seen less with Argentport Midrange getting slashed with the
Bartholo, the Seducer nerf. Despite this, the cow lives on-- and strongly so --in Armory, as he did before.
Therefore, this deck is well-positioned for the meta as we package:
Lightning Storm for Queen stuff;
Flamestoker &
Sabotage for Armory; and
Statuary Maiden,
Steward of the Past,
Feeding Time, and
Annihilate to cripple Time, the seemingly persistent Makto 4F list, among other void-reliant lists.
The plan is pretty simple. The game is generally threat -> answer for the first five turns. Turn five is quite interesting in that, generally, if you have
Flamestoker in hand and have met the influence requirements, you need to play in such a way that you can afford yourself the tempo loss on six, otherwise you can get blown out.
While the duo
Steward of the Past and
Statuary Maiden almost step on one another's toes in terms of function (making
Dawnwalker cry), the fact that they share the
Deadly keyword is reason enough to actually run these. Often you find yourself in situations where you actually want to play for favorable trades as opposed to playing for void value.
Flamestoker is the tool to close the game. We're aiming to win an attrition war against Midrange and Control stuff. Also dodging
Harsh Rule often makes it a dead card in our matchups, which is lovely.
A sticky
Black-Sky Harbinger is often enough to win against Aggro. Repeated
Lightning Storm and some well-timed
Vara's Favor can end the game right away.
The power base has seemed quite consistent overall, but I'm sure some math nerd can find issue with it, so I'm totally open to suggestions.
