Overview:
I put together this deck after seeing people on Reddit discussing gauntlet grinding and how expensive some of the decks were for new players (too many rares). As such, this deck has no rares or legendaries but does include one promo card
Svetya, Orene of Kosul which I believe is well worth the shiftstone since it is cheaper than a rare, competitively playable, and you will never open it in a pack so your shiftstone won't go to waste.
This deck abuses the AI's evaluation of combat tricks along with efficient aegis units for easy gauntlet games. This is
not a fast deck, it has taken ~11 turns to win each of my last 20 games. I played this deck from unranked to masters+ with
42 straight wins. I only played one gauntlet after hitting masters so your mileage may vary but the deck seems solid for new players who just want to get all of the free packs from ranking up. I would personally consider 11 turn games too slow for grinding gauntlet long term but its consistency over hyper aggressive decks might make it worthwhile (especially for its shiftstone cost).
Notes:
Always attack before playing creatures unless that creature is
Svetya, Orene of Kosul and you have a good reason to play her. Even if you have no spells that you want to play, its good to get into this habit so you have enough power to respond to your opponents plays or if your
Tundra Explorer draws a spell.
Svetya, Orene of Kosul is special because she can force your opponent to play their fast spell in response to her and she makes it very safe for you to play pump spells on your creatures until the start of your next turn. Sometimes playing
Mirror Image to make a creature before combat is the right play especially if you are attacking with a
Kosul Battlemage and/or copying a
Svetya, Orene of Kosul.
Also,
if a creature is unblocked, avoid using pump spells to get in some extra damage unless that damage would be lethal. It is better to save it to protect your creatures from spells or help them trade up against bigger creatures.
Mulligan:
I always redraw if my opening hand is just 2 blue power. Beyond that its is dependent on the rest of your hand but without
Borderlands Waykeeper I usually redraw any 2 power hands.
Card Choices:
-
Finest Hour x4 Bread and Butter, largest pump for least power. Note that this card and
Crownwatch Tactic do not say "your unit" so you can use them to pop an enemy's aegis before playing
Lightning Storm,
Vanquish, or even
Shield Bash. If an enemy has 1-3 strength, this means that it is possible to pump it before playing
Vanquish but this is generally not a recommended play unless it wins you the game or stops you from losing.
-
Lingering Influence x3 Smooths out draws with scout and helps prevent missed power drops. Increases deck consistency! (recommended by MagicTurtle_TCG)
-
Sharpened Reflex x4 Permanant pump, especially good with
Mirror Image. If I am stuck on 2-3 power, I will play this just to scout.
-
Borderlands Waykeeper x4 MVP early game. Great blocker, great ultimate.
Mirror Image will create a copy with the boosted stats and allow you to ultimate again. I often equip this with
Linebreaker's Shield.
-
Lightning Storm x4 Deck is built around dodging this card. Try to kill 2+ creatures with this spell. Depending on your board state and what the AI is playing, its often a good idea to wait a turn to play this. Maybe.
-
Linebreaker's Shield x4 If I have 2-3 power I will usually play this if I do not have another creature to play. At 4 power I usually try to wait for 5 to use its spellcraft.
-
Reinvigorate x4 Great combat trick since the AI will swing into you without accounting for another potential blocker. Great with
Borderlands Waykeeper since it can get up to +3/+3.
-
Vanquish x4 Removal!
-
Kosul Battlemage x4 Synergizes extremely well with all of your pump spells.
-
Mirror Image x4 Top priority is
Svetya, Orene of Kosul but pretty much everything in this deck is a good target. If a unit has been given endurance with
Reinvigorate, the copy will have endurance.
Linebreaker's Shield's endurance is part of the equipment so it will not be copied.
-
Tundra Explorer x4 With 24 spells in the deck, drawing a free card 30%+ of the time has worked out quite well for me. You do get a chance to cast spells drawn this way before damage so if you know you're going to lose on the next turn, swing with this and hope to draw a useful spell like
Crownwatch Tactic.
-
Svetya, Orene of Kosul x4 MVP against multiple decks. Delaying your opponent from playing a kill spell or attachment for one turn is a huge deal.
-
Duelist's Blade x2 Top end relic weapon to help you remove blockers and close out games. Great synergy with cards like
Linebreaker's Shield,
Throne Warden, and
Emerald Waystone.
-
Throne Warden x4 Great at helping you stabilize against aggressive decks and a great beater.
-
Crownwatch Standard x4 Transforming this into a
Crownwatch Tactic is amazing. If I have this in my opening hand and 3 or less total power cards I will play this turn 1. If I have 4 power cards I usually try to play my other power first, hoping to draw more and transforming this. Obviously this is heavily dependent on the rest of your hand.
Potential Upgrades:
The only thing I ever felt was missing was a silence ability for dawnwalker and maybe another flying blocker.
Valkyrie Enforcer could be a perfect replacement for
Tundra Explorer but this is untested. I would
not recommend using any of the common/uncommon silence effects and the deck plays very smoothly without it so I would not craft
Valkyrie Enforcers just for this deck.
As Dazbuzz pointed out on Reddit, if you're looking to add rares to the deck,
Rilgon's Disciple is also a shoo-in. Again,
Tundra Explorer would be the safest cut.
Although
Permafrost isn't a spell, its still 1 power removal that is very effective against most gauntlet decks. Still considering what to swap out. This is a nonbo with relic weapons though.
