A rehash of one of my favorite old expedition decks,
OG mono-P Wump that I managed to climb to master's with this month (Jan '21). I didn't climb exclusively with it, but it was the final push to get me out of Diamond 2.
Early
Wump & Mizo is pretty good, in combination with
Master Conjurer can make for some potent tempo swings. With the classic finisher of
Jarrall Ascending, you can steal some games with burn damage on occasion.
Vicious Overgrowth provides much-needed removal against Valks, Mandrakes, and
Lord Steyer's Tower, in addition to opposing Elysian threats.
Could this deck use
Krull, Xumuc Occultist and
Know When to Hold 'em? Yeah, probably, but also dealing 6 to my own face randomly is not how I want to lose. I think there's a better consideration to swap the
Helio, the Skywinder maindeck for
The Speaking Circle and relegate Helio to the market.
Formbend is still an interesting market card, and at only 1 cost it can help you activate
Master Conjurer for cheap. I was considering
Reshape but you very rarely have the requisite Time influence. Otherwise that would be a great tech against Mandrakes. In a similar vein,
Fluctuate Reality can downgrade multiple targets (or buff your Helio...hmm...) but
Polymorph is decent enough single-target removal if you need that.
I'm hesitant to take
Storm Spiral out of the market, because that can also do work against Valks or Mandrakes (though they have a fair amount of key 3-health units, hence
Vicious Overgrowth).
Unfortunately of the pitiful removal in Expedition, both
Suffocate and
Send an Agent hit some of our main threats. You can sandbag a Jarrall until you get 6 or 8 influence, but often Master Conjurer is one you want to get down as early as possible if you don't already have 6 Primal influence. Fortunately we have 3 big threats, and
Learned Imitator as 4 extra copies of them as needed.
