a combination of two lists:
https://eternalwarcry.com/decks/details/zkpaMuwOH2g/beats-by-katra
https://eternalwarcry.com/decks/details/LwovZOJ6UfE/tjs-alessi
at a glance:
※
Sword of Unity on
Auric Interrogator will trigger
Katra, the Devoted by itself
※ mainly excited to play
Water of Life,
Katra, the Devoted, and
Alessi, Combrei Archmage in the same deck
09/18 update:
i brought a list to the
casual friday,
this is the list i played.
(one of our matches was featured on stream, and
game 2 kind of shows what this deck gets to do in magical christmasland)
we went 2-2 in the swiss (with a pretty close match against
bruisedbygod).
i basically tried to hedge our choices on the spell package running 2 of each
Sabotage/
Cull the Deck/
Vanquish/
Vara's Choice
at that point, we were running 6 1 drops but i decided to cut a
Xenan Lifespeaker and
Ayan, the Abductor at the last minute for 2
Trail Maker, which i'm sort of alright with.
the makers serve to smooth out our influence while actually increasing the likelyhood of playing a sword of unity/katra on curve.
but now that i've played more with this deck,
Katra, the Devoted just feels like a bad
Xenan Obelisk most of the time and i'm starting to realize how much of a meme this deck really is.
i think the superior TJS Alessi route is to go with
something like Mail has been cooking up of late with
Tavrod, Auric Broker
09/17 update:
so i've had a little time to reflect and i'd like to chat about what's up with this list.
the goal and challenge of this deck is to successfully blend two strategies:
TJS alessi and
katra lifeforce beats.
as it is, i think this list still needs a little more tuning to achieve that goal.
one concern i'm facing is the density of 1 drops. we currently run 9, which also ties into the 2
Shadowlands Guide (which i wouldn't want to run more of). this density of 1 drops aligns more with paradox's
'beats by katra' list which simply wanted to mash face as hard as possible and keep digging up the corpses. but with alessi, you generally are trying grow your units and make a board state that is insurmountable. we're gathering battleskills and power and eventually overwhelming our opponent with most likely a sword of unity.
now, if we were to lean more towards that TJS alessi plan, i could see trimming the 1 drops down to probably 6 (and nixing the shadowlands entirely). that deck wants to be more spell dense and interactive with things like
Slay/
Annihilate/
Vanquish, digging with
Cull the Deck, and utilizing self-sufficient growers like
Awakened Student
the issue that can arise is having spells for alessi, but no lifeforce for your katra and
Cult Aspirant. in theory,
Water of Life a.k.a 'memewater' a.k.a 'jankjuice' is perfect, but there can be situations where you don't have either of the relevant lifeforce cards and they're total duds.
Sword of Unity on the other hand fits perfectly into that mold, being a threat on its own while advancing both strategies.
anyway this is more of an unfiltered blog at this point but yea, right now i'm trying to identify what i see as the core of the deck and then just trying to bridge the gap as best as i can with the remaining flex spots. glad to hear any suggestions and thanks for reading! ;w;b
ayan is definitely a consideration, as well as (something else from your list) Trail Maker. trail maker, i think, would be an inclusion if the goal was to ramp to katra/interrogator/sword of unity because those do feel like critical pieces of this deck and it's not always easy to play them in situations you'd like to (with protection).
semi-related but Sword of Unity is amazing in big combrei because they have a ton of mana dorks but also dem bigboys, wheras in this kind of list we need to put in some effort to build a 'bigboy' of our own.
So, firstly, I tried to fit in some extra lifegain cards since the only card I don't own straight from the list is Sword of Unity. I fit in some Stonepowder Alchemists and some Temple Scribes, although the latter is questionable in its performance.
After that I thought "hey, Water of Life looks very interesting with Katra, the Devoted and Alessi, Combrei Archmage and Cult Aspirant... Could there be any other way to make it even greedier?".... and that led me to add a full playset of Learned Herbalists.
The combo is just insane, and very fun. A single copy of Water of Life activates Alessi, Katra and Aspirant twice without extra support, and Herbalist allows you to activate Aspirant and Katra twice for each copy of the card. If you have Multiple pieces of the combo, your board becomes degenerate. I strongly recommend trying, and optimizing the list!
