This is my attempt to make Argenport Mid relevant again. It's more or less a bastard child of AP Mid and Combrei Aggro. Use Tavrod to fetch Sword of Unity for a fun time.
Updated 8/9/18: Replaced
Unseen Commando with
Kosul Battlemage. I originally put in Commando to fight against aggro decks, but with the high amount of cheap, tutored removal that aggro runs, Commando is only slightly better than Kosul against aggro because Kosul has more resistance against
Permafrost and
Torch, and it's better in every other situation (especially against control).
I also took out
Slay for two
Annihilate because it ended up being too slow, and the meta has shifted towards more juicy
Annihilate targets such as
Alhed, Mount Breaker which I am seeing a lot of lately. I cut two
Bloodletter for four
Inquisitor's Blade as
Inquisitor's Blade has more impact when dropped onto a fat/aegis unit.
Substitutions
Obviously, I think the build I have right now is the best. But you may find that other cards are more suitable for you, or you may wish to modify the deck a little. Here are some suggestions.
- You two
Thief's Pick are your two flex slots. You can replace them with any combination of
Suffocate,
Annihilate,
Finest Hour,
Sabotage or
Vanquish as you see fit and as suits the current meta. If in doubt,
Thief's Pick is always the safest option because it always fits on
Tavrod, Auric Broker and
Copperhall Elite.
- Your two drop slot demands either TJ or S influence. If you find yourself constantly unable to acquire the influence necessary to play your two drops, you can replace
Ripknife Assassin with
Crownwatch Paladin for a more even influence demand on 2.
- You can replace
Unseen Commando with
Auric Record Keeper or
Kosul Battlemage if you find that your Commandoes keep dying to Torch. The disasdvantage of
Auric Record Keeper is that it dies to
Vanquish instead, and is not as good against aggro decks (which can be a bad matchup for this deck in variants that do not run
Suffocate). The disadvantage of
Kosul Battlemage is that is worse against aggro as well. They are also slightly cheaper to craft, so you can use it as a budget substitution. Note that
Auric Record Keeper is a Minotaur and can be fetched with
Tavrod, Auric Broker. You can try putting it in for some Minotaur tribal if you want. I think
Unseen Commando is slightly better overall because it has Flying, which is very important.
-
Bloodletter can be replaced for
Vanquisher's Blade Pick the one you like best.
Bloodletter is better against aggro decks, while
Vanquisher's Blade is better against midrange and big unit decks.
- The
Desert Marshal in the Market can be replaced with
Argenport Banner if you find yourself repeatedly unable to hit Tavrod influence (JJSS). But I don't really think this is necessary as I've tested the deck and the influence works out fairly well. The Marshal serves an important role in the deck in acting as removal for problematic units and giving you air supremacy with your 3 drops, so this is the replacement you should think hardest about making.
Game Plan
Play good units. Attack with good units. If the opponent has a good unit,
Slay it. Use
Stand Together and
Sword of Unity to protect your units from removal.
Try to fetch
Sword of Unity with
Tavrod, Auric Broker and then immediately play it on him. Being a ripe target for removal and being easily chumpable are his two greatest weaknesses. At the same time, its Overwhelm and Lifesteal synergize extremely well with the extra attack that he gives it. This creates an amazing synergy between the two cards and your opponent will probably concede once they see it.
