Just hit Masters with this, Took QueenBen's suggestion to sub out Regent's Tomb for Waystone, haven't been hurting for power level because of it. Though I might tinker with having a Burglarize in the market instead, sometimes relics are a problem. Great deck!
I took out Regent's Tomb. I didn't have it crafted at the time, and Burglarize seemed a much more direct way of dealing with things that were making me miserable.
Quick update, made it from Diamond III to Masters with this deck and loving it, thanks! I ended up putting Unwavering in the market because it was a dead draw in too many matchups (and didn't have Amilli). Rhysta has been MVP. Thanks for the fun (and budget friendly) list!
This deck packs a punch! so far took me from gold 2 to diamond 3.
Made a few changes:
Swapped Amilli, Cloudmarshal for Inquisitor Makto - figured that in this kinda removal-heavy meta he is better.
Swapped Regent's Tomb for Amethyst Waystone - yes even this deck with it really good power-base can be power-screwed sometimes.
Maindeck - (-2) Sabotage, (+2) Regent's Tomb, because I opened my first 2 copies of it a few days ago and wanted to try it.
Couple of initial thoughts on tweaking this and Ilya's AP deck approach:
- Vanquisher's Blade is great, especially with Hojan. 2 or 3 feel like plenty to me. Very useful, especially with all the void-focused decks around (looking at you, FJS "jund" decks...)
- I honestly found that marketing Unwavering Exorcist was a lot more consistent for me than trying to rely on drawing it from the maindeck. Even after taking her all the way up to being a 4-of, which felt like too many.
- I've gone back and forth on both Valkyrie Enforcer and Lost Scroll. Scroll feels greedy, whereas it feels like there's fewer targets than Enforcer these days than there once were...
- Both the 1 cost spells are excellent and necessities. 4xDefiance might be excessive however; I run 3, the 4 Slays, 2 avigrafts, and 3 vanq blades which feels like a solid removal package thus far.
Just finished up the ECS at 15-13 with the deck -2 hojin +2 fenris. It wasn't intentional but I was testing them before the event and forgot to swap them out before registering. Still not entirely sold on either one of them or valkyrie enforcer but I'm not sure what to replace them with yet. I'm open to suggestions. I know for sure I punted away at last one win, probably more. The peaks matchup seems pretty tough, not sure what to do about that.
Disclaimer, I've been playing eternal for about 3 weeks and this deck for 1-ish but I have played a lot of magic so I have a general understanding of card games
Been playing a similar list with 4x Tavrod. Curious to know your thoughts on it in the deck to add more punch (so much removal that I feel I need the extra threats if I want one to survive). Also, do you think Extract would be good in the Market to deal with Regent's Tomb, I've been facing quite a lot at Diamond.
Hey an thanks for the list! With aggro seeing a decline in popularity and you playing two drops and varas favor for early interaction, is defiance really necessary in this deck?
Would you put blades main or in the market? Been running up against a few reanimator/mill decks and not faring very well against them.Maybe I just need to avigraft better.
Been having success with this so far. 5-2 and the only reason I've lost so far is due to power flooding. Telut, Smuggler, and Rhysta have been my MVPs so far. The pressure they bring has been great.
Ya, wish there was still a down vote. I spent 8000 to make this deck only to find out how terrible it is...lol. Joke's on me I guess. And before anyone says the typical, you don't know what you are doing line...I make masters every single month.
I'm like 1-6 so far in Diamond...Mill is more consistent then this is. Generally in every single game, I'm getting completely flooded with power cards and take beatings to the face because I can't put anything else out there. I've played Telut ONE time in 7 or 8 games.
Maybe try saying something constructive to make this better for you? I agree that not every deck is good for everyone, this may be a bad deck for you personally to play, for example I am terrible at playing control decks, I lose every single game.
This deck got me to masters in 4 days. 2 of which I probably only played 4 games. So no, it's not a terrible deck. Good troll though.
Sorry, I was actually curious (and maybe a little frustrated), if not descriptive. It's entirely possible I just played the deck wrong and could very well be missing something. If you have any VoDs of the deck I'll check them out and see what I can pick up. The deck does look like a lot of fun for sure. Didn't mean to imply it was terrible or anything
That's fine dude, I've got vods up on my twitch channel so maybe check them out, I usually play this or one of my janky brews that I love. Twitch.tv/duffmani
4-2 with the deck today, not sure I'm Hojaning correctly. It feels wrong to wait on playing him but any time I run him out early he eats a removal spell. Of course if I wait he can just eat a removal spell later.
I was struggling to make Masters from low-mid Diamond, but this got me 5 consecutive wins. Hojan seems strange in a deck with no direct buffs, but with Telut on the board he can swing as a 13/12.
Just took another look at my Game History and in all 5 wins I went second, so this was not just luck.
Hojan and Telut are the best cards in the deck. Played the turn before Telut, Hojin is unlikely to draw removal and will swing the game next turn. What other unit would you want to swing with the turn you play Telut? There's only Rhysta that's comparable and you might need to play her earlier for the Sigil. It might be possible to drop some removal and the Lost Scrolls for combat tricks and Gilded Glaives to use Hojan's Renown for ramp, but the deck will be less consistent that way, and you won't have enough copies of Hojan.
There are some Pledge cards that could help with mana, but I'm not sure what you'd cut for them.
Yeah this is very true. The scrolls are there for a) mana fixing and b) an extra Hojan pump for more face damage.
I don't believe removal should be taken out as the deck does struggle in the early game vs anything with three toughness or deadly. Merchants prove a pretty big stonewall.
I was thinking maybe exchange some seats for the quick draw transmute sigils?

Congrats on masters and thanks for the list.
