Hello! I'd like to share a combo-control-burn (?!!) deck I've created which has been playing out surprisingly well so far, even though it's early days for the deck (just went from Gold III to Gold I with 7 wins out of 9 matches). The usual disclaimer though, if you're looking for a laddering deck look elsewhere - this is still experimental.
It's also quite fun to play if you like your card games to involve
fast spells,
decisions and a bit of
high-rolling RNG.
The game plan varies a a little bit depending on the deck you're facing, but has the same general pattern.
Early game you want to work your way up to 6 power while controlling the board with
Hailstorm,
Torch,
Permafrost, and
Rockslide. If you can, save
Mortar and
Obliterate for burning face unless you're facing a must-remove creature.
Equivocate is an absolute star in this deck, as it can essentially bounce and silence Tavrod, Makto etc. while also comboing with the other parts of the deck (see below).
For
Marisen's Disciple you need to choose the right vermin for the deck and situation you're facing. If you're up against Time/X midrange or Rakano, the scorpion is often good for stalling. Against Scream, you might want the flyer as a blocked in case they have Scream and no removal in hand. If the opponent doesn't have much on board, use the scarab to put pressure on their life total.
Once you've got 6 power and you're not about to die, play Flamerstoker or use
Celestial Omen to grab Flamestoker. This card is a powerhouse, and seems well-positioned at the moment as there's very little relic hate and a lot of removal being played is sorcery-speed on the opponent's turn, which Flamestoker gets around.
Once you've got a Flamestoker churning out 5/5s, use your burn and removal to remove blockers and go face.
Unstable Form is there to combo with Flamestoker, giving you a free 6-cost dude each time. Equivocate also combos well here as you can play it on your own Infernus to get a new 5-cost guy before the Infernus is sacrificed.
Unstable Form also works well on Marisen's Disciple, usually turning the 2/2 into something bigger. With the echo on unstable form, it's also very handy in combination with Strategise, giving you an easy choice for what to put on the bottom if you've got no spare power. It can also pop an aegis on an opposing creature, or work as a 'silence' against a Tavrod or Makto in a pinch.
With Influence, the key targets to hit (after one of each influence of course) are PP so you can play Wisdom and Hailstorm, and then FFF so you can play Flamestoker.
If you're up against unit-light control decks, you can use more of the burn on their face, but remember you'll need to keep some back to deal with late-game Icarias and Champions of Cunning etc.
This is a fun deck!
