I've been having a ton of fun with the new expedition format and this is the deck that took me to masters, so I wanted to share it. It has performed really well against Xenan Cultists, which has been the predominant deck of the current meta. The focus of the deck is built around
Larai, the Appraiser, which can give you a lot of value while also being an excellent blocker against more aggressive decks. Plus it occasionally shuts down relic weapons.
Relics
Duelist's Blade is usually the first grab from Larai. Gives you decent removal while also giving you face aegis, which is pretty good in the meta at the moment.
Staff of Stories is your alternative to duelist's blade. Grab this against slower control decks or if you are already ahead on board. If you can manage to keep the staff safe, you'll end up with a ton of card advantage.
Avigraft is a premium removal card. Shuts down Xenan's units from coming back from the void, as well as preventing stuff like
Incarnus, Makkar's Listener from overrunning you with value. Just watch out for face aegis. Not many ways to pop it, and avigraft can't go through it.
Shard of the Spire is a one of in the deck. Turns
Siraf, Grand Strategist into a win con, as well as making Larai a bigger threat.
We also have 2 copies of
Ageworn Vestige. We can't grab it with Larai, but it helps control the board, give us a bunch of health, and have additional copies of board wipes.
Units
Besides being a late game win con,
Siraf, Grand Strategist is an excellent wall against aggro decks as well as making your opponent put out more cards for a board wipe, since Siraf can get a big board presence if left unchecked.
Rime Conclave Smuggler is our merchant of choice. I think a Hooru market is better than an Elysian one and it helps consistently keep face aegis.
Forbidden-Rider Outcast is another premium card. A lot of units essentially die with -3 attack, making this a 2 for 1 card. Against slower decks the curse of loneliness can help keep relic weapons going, as well as being our only way to pop face aegis without wasting a card.
Spells
Seek Power and
Eilyn's Favor help us have consistent power and face aegis.
Edict of Kodosh and
Edict of Grodov are great removal spells against the right colors. Shadow is the most prevalent color that I've seen, so this gives us a good advantage against them, especially since it helps shut down the void even more.
Aamri's Choice is usually used to bounce and silence units, but the +3/+3 is occasionally useful.
Shen-Ra Speaks is the
Harsh Rule of the format, while also shutting down entomb and weakening the void.
Market
Combrei Insignia may not be the right choice, but having power in the market has always proven to be useful to me.
Adjudicator's Gavel completely shuts down your opponents void, which is strong in the current meta.
Permafrost is a quick removal card. Same with
Bring Down, with the caveat that the unit has to be flying.
Qirin Ascendant is attachment removal, that is a minor threat with a shard out.
