I have been on and off trying to find a viable Katra deck. I decided to publish this deck since I haven't seen this combination yet and I found it quite successful. I have about 50% win rate over 40 games with it in lower masters. I mostly lost to the top tier decks such as Icaria Blue and Argenport Midrange. Therefore, I think it's a decent ladder deck, especially in an aggro-heavy meta.
This deck was inspired by SirRhino's
Lifeforce - Sadistic Devotion deck. The main goal is to give the units buffed by
Katra, the Devoted flying to avoid ground stalls. SirRhino used
Sadistic Valkyrie and
Colony Matron to achieve that. But if you look at cards like
Unseen Commando,
Sadistic Valkyrie looks plain bad IMHO. And Matron is quite slow.
I use a different approach here:
Black-Sky Harbinger is a very strong flying unit with lifesteal and has only one Primal influence requirement. So I tried splashing Primal and found it really no problem to hit the requirements for
Black-Sky Harbinger at 6 power. Three
Trail Makers (which could also be replaced by
Seek Power), one
Primal Sigil, two
Crest of Cunning, and two
Crest of Wisdom did it for me. The crests are also helpful in aiding your draw as Xenan does not have its own crest yet. The second Primal card I found a good addition to this deck is
Accelerated Evolution (also only one Primal influence required). It serves as another means to get your units flying and activates
Auric Interrogator's card draw.
Individual card choices:
Sanctuary Priest,
Oasis Seeker,
Ayan, the Abductor,
Vara's Favor, and
Amber Waystone are lifeforce deck staples to generate lifeforce, especially to trigger
Katra, the Devoted.
I added two
Xenan Obelisks mainly to help cases where
Katra, the Devoted is not drawn (or drawn late) and to activate
Auric Interrogator.
Accelerated Evolution: Due to the echo effect, this gives you eight possibilities to get a unit flying and to activate
Auric Interrogator. The +1/+1 can also be relevant, to get out of
Torch range or survive as a blocker for example.
Auric Interrogator vs.
Beckoning Lumen: I first tried both and they both work well in this deck. In the end, the lower cost of
Auric Interrogator made it the winner for me. With
Katra, the Devoted,
Accelerated Evolution, and
Xenan Obelisk, there are plenty of ways to activate the card draw.
Black-Sky Harbinger: This card so good. It makes games vs. aggro or Grenadin decks easy to win. Buffed by
Katra, the Devoted and/or
Xenan Obelisk it becomes a game-winning menace to any opponent who is not able to remote it.
Archive Curator: I found having silence very important to get key units out of the way. Compared to adding another removal spell, having it on a flying unit that can be buffed by
Katra, the Devoted serves the game plan of this deck nicely.
Sabotage is very important to keep your board from being cleared, especially against
Harsh Rule.
Removal suite:
Two of
Annihilate,
Banish, and
Extract each. I am unsure whether this enough. Having more hurts your game plan but makes you weaker against Temporal Control and Armory. Depends on the meta I guess.
Trail Maker vs.
Seek Power: Personal preference, I think. I like to have an emergency chump blocker.
Any feedback or suggestions welcome.
