Reached Masters with a combination of this deck and
Ixtun Gardens (Master) at the end of August 2019.
The deck is heavily inspired by
PandaMan's Praxis Bounce. Thanks for that :). I decided to replace fire with shadow for superior 2-drops, removal and Azindel, but the deck works according to the same idea.
-----
The idea is that bouncing
Evenhanded Golem back to your hand repeatedly creates huge card advantage and then crush the opponent with your typical efficient midrange threats. If needed,
Azindel, Revealed provides a great top end in a grindy matchup.
Some notes on card choices:
2-drops
Teacher of Humility is one of the best cards in the game and sometimes wins game by itself against draw-heavy decks. I have a tough time to choose between
Blackhall Warleader and
Ripknife Assassin. Warleader is the better card to put early pressure on your opponent but often feels useless late in the game, while a deadly minion is always useful. A 2/2 split is probably not correct, but that is what I run at the moment.
Burdenbearer Wisp is one of your combo-enablers.
Among spells,
Annihilate and
Desecrate are the main reason to move to Xenan, as they efficiently deal with bigger threats (something I felt Praxis had a hard time to do).
Vara's Favor is a wonderful tool against aggro and helps your power base,,
Teleport is another combo enabler and sometimes helps pushing through that last bit of damage by removing a blocker late in game.
The rest
Vara, Vengeance-Seeker,
Sandstorm Titan,
Cykalis, the Burning Sand and
Caiphus, Wandering King are all good to very good midrange creatures with Caiphus additionally synergizing with the bounce strategy.
Insistent Automaton gives you another possibility to get your Golems back.
Azindel, Revealed is your top end in grindy matchups and provides another source of card advantage.
How to play
Having Golem in your opening hand should be your focus, you can keep less than ideal power bases because he will draw additional cards. Other than that, always try to protect your golems if you can (i.e. with Teleport or Temple Tactics). Having your opponent waste a torch on a golem that you pull back into your hand is wonderful. Other than that, this is a pretty straight forward midrange deck.
Other cards
There are a bunch of other cards you could think about including in the deck, especially some shadow removal. The one card that I played around with when I met Icaria and Re-animator a couple times was
Nullblade which helps you deal with those two strategies better.
Do you feel like you are drawing through your deck enough without Temple Scribe?
There are indeed matches where it feels that you can't draw enough, especially if you don't get Golem early. However, I did not include Temple Scribe because I feel like I would still rather have the Shadow 2-drops than a 1/1 plus another card. It's hard to say whether that is the right decision I guess.
