Do you like Skycrag but hate the stigma of being a Sling player or God forbid, running yet another Yeti deck? Well, Skaggor is back, baby! and it's new and improved. I built this deck from the ashes of the Skycrag Aggro deck that took me to Masters back when
Torch was fast and
Ice Bolt was the hot new removal spell. This deck hits hard, hits fast, and generates enough value to push through stalled boards and into victory.
Early Game
Strong threats early in the game create a strong presence and start your opponent on a swift clock, like
Snowcrust Yeti,
Champion of Fury (yes, he's still worth playing), and the addition to the group,
Prowling Amaruq. The flexibility this card offers, letting you choose between aegis and quickdraw, as well as the value he generates, can help maintain your board state and keep that clock ticking.
Card Advantage
I generate card advantage through
Whispering Wind and
Dusk Raider, as well as the draw that
Jekk, Mercenary Hunter creates.
Blazing Salvo limits the market choices (no
Bore!), but the ability to access the market at fast speed combined with the damage it deals to units makes it the best choice by far. Lethari Soothsayer also creates some free Torches and that's enough to close some games. Each method for gaining advantage relies on situations, so make sure that you read the board well and apply the right solution to the right problem.
Removal
A few options for efficient removal exist in Skycrag, most notably
Sear. Depending what units attack and when, it can even take care of large blockers with big bodies provided that you hit with sufficient attack power.
Maveloft Huntress also hits really hard, clearing the way for your attackers and even generating a little card advantage along the way.
Blazing Salvo does fast damage to units and can help get your clock ticking in the early game by removing early blockers. Also,
Lethrai Soothsayer and her
Premonition Bolt make a free, slow
Torch.
Everything else
Yushkov, the Usurper fixes just about any complicated board state and generates enough value that you can land a singnificant number of threats the turn after he's played.
Milos, Rebel Bomber creates early pressure that opponents cannot ignore and often forces them to spend removal which could be used on other threats, like Yushkov or Jekk.
Casualties of the Cause helps with enemy sites,
Edict of Linrei and
Edict of Shavka help deal with threats from specific factions,
Ice Bolt hits whatver the Edicts cannot, and
Slag answers enemy relics. It's not nearly as good as
Bore, but it allows
Blazing Salvo into the deck and that's too valuable to ignore.
Flex Slots
Oni Patrol isn't a prefect one drop, and
Oni Ronin or
Pyroknight and
Autotread make great replacements as well.
Sear can be replaced by
Conflagrate or even
Torch, it depends entirely on how you like to play your game.
Incendiary Slagmite swaps nicely for
Prowling Amaruq, but keep the
Dusk Raider and
Whispering Wind, unless you don't like drawing cards.
Censari Brigand,
Censari Dervish, and
Yeti Pioneer can replace
Lethrai Soothsayer if you need more speed than onslaught.
Acquisitive Crow also works and usually draws removal.
I haven't found anything that replaces
Yushkov, the Usurper, not even
Siege Train. Yushkov slows the enemy down too much to cut him from the list. The name of the game is speed. If you do find something better then by all means please let me know.
A Note on Power and Opening Hand
This deck will not fire if you can't start doing things by turn 2. You have to get off to a fast start and keep pressure on through turn 4. If you were able to land a
Whispering Wind, then dig aggressively for a
Yushkov, the Usurper. Pluder for Sigils so that you can get the most out of
Jekk, Mercenary Hunter. Always attack with
Champion of Fury as soon as possible
Milos, Rebel Bomber. Use the berserk that
Dusk Raider provides. Trigger Onslaught. Attack, attack, attack. Play aggressive. It's better to play a depleted Turn 1
Skycrag Cylix and hit your faction requirements on Turn 2 (charge on the Champion!) than to try to play it for the Treaure Trove. Make sure that you can land a good Turn 1 or Turn 2 threat.
Please let me know what you think in the comments and definitely tell me about your experiences with the deck. I think careful piloting can push this deck far, and I'm curious to know of you think the same. Good luck and have fun!
