Updated for the new set since I finally decided to get to masters with it.
Gustrider is pretty much the only reason to splash a third faction now since
Brenn's Insight,
Graviturgist, and
Toxicology are such good options in Xenan Dredge.
Alternative Market Options:
Discard Outlets:
Toxicology ->
Back-Alley Delinquent,
Feln Cauldron
(Cauldron is fun but neither alternative is anywhere near as good as Toxicology)
Kill Spells:
Worthy Cause ->
Feeding Time,
Twilight Hunt
(The lifesteal on Worthy Cause can wrap up what might otherwise have been a close game against an aggro deck)
Board Wipes:
Fall to Ruin ->
End Of An Era
Reanimation:
Krull, Xumuc Occultist,
Through The Unknown
Anti-Reanimator:
Eavesdrop,
Waylay,
Pick Clean
(Dredge really struggles against combo decks in general unless it gets a very aggressive start. I recommend not bothering with these and just focus on cheating out fatties ASAP.)
Evasion:
Secret Passage
(Adding Unblockable to
Shoaldredgers and
Endless Nightmares is a great way to make up for their lack of Overwhelm and saccing them is sometimes even a good thing)
Card Advantage:
Deleph's Awakening
(Great way to refill your hand if you've built up a big void, but you're hopefully already winning by that point)
Condemn markets are pretty good in this archetype, especially alongside
Ebon Dune Smuggler if your market ends up having 3+ 1-cost cards. The cards below are possibly worth considering if you opt for this build.
Kill Spells: Edict of Makkar,
Turn For The Worse
I notice I seem to struggle hitting TT consistently, so I started looking for cards to swap, and I think adding some copies of Bhodi and Rox Forever would be a really good addition. They'd serve the same purpose as Fear: when discarded, they discount Shoaldredger and Valles Rex, but when drawn they can be inscribed for power or pitched to Gustriders for the above discounts. The downside is that inscribing them doesn't give a free discard effect, but the upside is that if you inscribe them, you can either redraw them to either discard/inscribe again or mill them from your top 7.
I'm considering cutting some copies of Malaise/Fear/Shoaldredger to make room for them, but I'm not sure how many of them I want and how many/which cards to cut for them.
Also, keep in mind that the Dismantle in the market can be used as the second T in a pinch. I end up grabbing it for that reason surprisingly often and it's easy to forget about since it's rarely in your hand when you realize that you need it.
I think it and Fear have all the same upsides (being 5+ attack for Rex and Walker, being units for Hen that you can inscribe, being solid beaters if hard-cast in a pinch, etc) except for two: Fear's ability to be a 0-cost mill two and Bhodi's ability to be reshuffled when you inscribe it for future milling/inscribing. So, I'd consider them sidegrades, and I'm trying out -2 Malaise -1 Fear // +3 Bhodi and Rox Forever.
One last thought: I've played this deck a handful of times, and I find myself running into the situation where I have cards in hand I want discarded, but no looting effects yet. I couldn't find any "draw and discard" effects to possibly add to the market in TS, so I'm wondering: How much of a detriment would it be to move Torgov's Wares to the market, and what would you replace Wares with in the maindeck? Herald's Song seems close in effect, but too slow. Nocturnal Observer is a bit cheaper overall, and lets you dig deeper (you get the same number of draw/discard cycles as Song, but with an added Nightfall draw) and has positive synergy with itself, since playing an Observer can "activate" your other observers for 2 turns. However, I'm concerned about the vulnerability of using a unit for your looting. Any thoughts?
However, if you still want to move Wares to the market then Observer would be a decent enough replacement. She's a bit too slow for my taste but she's very good at what she does. There's a lot more I could say about this so I'll probably try to add a more detailed "card considerations" section to my write-up tomorrow and hopefully that'll be more helpful :)
EDIT: It's so bad that I keep forgetting that it exists but Feln Cauldron could be a really fun way to add a discard outlet to your market.
I'm currently giving Observer a whirl, since she got buffed out of Torch range and replacing spells with units has quite a few upsides in this list (more Hen targets, more Shoal discounts, more Gustrider activators), and I've been impressed with her in the past in reanimator lists. Another consideration is Rainfall Accord: it has the same effect as Wares, minus the healing and costs more, but it has the niche upside that you can end your turn with 4 power to reanimate Nightmares, and still cast it at the end of your opponent's turn. Not big, but something. Last consideration is Tragedy. Not very good, but this deck can bin its own cards pretty easily and cheaply, and 8 damage to any enemy can close out games without combat. Losing 1 draw is pretty rough, though.
Anyway, look forward to seeing your write-up, mate. This is a great deck, and I'm so happy to see dredge alive and well in Throne again.
Just a question, why Grenahen? After the nerd it doesn't discard the cards anymore, and so, instead wouldn't be better another discard engine?
(Also, the other discard options aren't that great. They're all either too slow, clunky, or cost inefficient to be worth a slot Imo.)
