Well, this was a fun deck. A combination of go-wide payoffs and some solid bombs.
Week 1, I had a fairly weak pool available - no fixing, and the factions I had enough cards to fill out a deck had low card quality. Went 0-2 and decided to hold off for a bit. Passed on playing week 2 because I was busy.
Week 3, I opened
Acedonis, Untainted and
Molot & Nakova, built a Skycrag deck to take advantage of them and all my go-wide payoffs (
Steam Blast,
Oni Battledriver, etc), and got rewarded with a 22-6 run.
Week 4, updated the deck with a light splash for
Waystone Gate and
Nahid's Distillation and finished things up, going 6-4.
Overall, this deck had two modes of winning. One mode was an aggressive go-wide strategy - between
Relentless Pursuit (a card I usually dislike),
Assault Shield,
Steam Blast,
Oni Battledriver, and
Grizzled Quickshot, I had a lot of ways to benefit from going wide. Lots of cheap units helped me flood the board quickly -
Cheerful Shepherd in particular was really good, and actually sold me on this strategy in Draft too. Battledriver was by far the most efficient way to punch through damage in a board stall, and let me cash in 0/1 and 1/2 bodies for tons of value.
The other mode of winning was on the back of dragons and other evasive units, particularly
Molot & Nakova. As you may imagine, they won the game pretty much every time they hit the board, which happened with surprising frequency (and usually spark'd). Helios, the Skywinder was also reasonable, although somewhat high-variance - if I got to draw 2+ cards off it (meaning I had drawn a
Primal Symbol or two beforehand), that was usually a win. On the other hand, playing Helios without sufficient influence felt terrible. I'll also call out
Acedonis, Untainted, who did quite well - I had a lot of damage-based spells to pump, including one memorable game in which I was able to burn out an opponent with 3x buffed
Steam Blasts.
MVP:
Molot & Nakova. Won pretty much every game they were played in, functioning as both a board wipe and evasive, resilient threat. Well worth going heavy into Skycrag to run.
