I've been playing a lot of
Rebuild and two of my favourite pet cards have been
Chronostorm and
Lured Away.
Maul has always been an interesting build-around to me and I've noticing a lot of good card releases and buffs for the deck so here's a modern attempt at draw-hug maul.
Trotheus's semi-recent version
Nightmaul follows the same pattern of the original maul decks: aggroish/tempo game and using maul as the finisher.
The problem with these style of night decks is that most nightfall units are bad. Sure, the chip damage from a
Gloaming Wisp or
Nocturnal Creeper can add up, but these cards always just feel bad to play. They don't apply enough pressure in slow matchups and you lose to faster ones because their units are better than yours. The worst matchups were always other aggro decks for this reason.
In the other direction, there are super slow durdle decks that run
Dichro's Ruin and
Pinnacle of the Reach, which have trouble winning and are usually only mildly annoying to play against.
Instead, I've opted for a more midrange package of units while maintaining solid control options. Choronostorm and Hailstorm (thus Tempo Storm Maul) are mostly 1-sided board wipes against aggro decks, leading to big A-spaces and mauls the following turn.
Nocturnal Observer has also been an interesting skill-testing card. The choice to hit for damage, hold up for blocks, or loot can be very important in the overall flow of the game.
Tuning
Still working on the market and considering
Great Valley Smuggler as another 4 health unit. Units to consider are
Cykalis, the Burning Sand for more pressure,
Baying Serasaur for a bigger nightfall threat, and
Derry Cathain, Ripclaw Rider for more disruption/midrange threat. A different version of this deck could include
Twilight Hunt with a significant dino subtheme.
I go back and forth on Teacher. The abundance of targeted removal allowed it get through a decent amount of times and I like maximizing the chances of sticking some sort of draw punish effect, but there are decent number of board states where it never connects. The nocturnal observer has been great in those situations.
As for problematic relics, I'm considering bumping up the copies of Dissociate, but that's a meta call.
The Feln version I'm testing has backup burn like Silverblade Menace. One of the great plays in this elysian version is lured away + maul to maximize damage and Furious Accusation trades fast speed and unit removal for a bit of burn. In theory if the opponent has a full hand, this combo on turn 8 deals 25 damage, which is a cute observation even if that's unlikely to happen.
I have no illusions that these sorts of decks will remain T3 jank, but they're sure fun to tinker and play.
