Activate interlocks! Dyna-therms connected. Infra-cells up; mega-thrusters are go!
Let's go, Voltron Force!
This us the
Gauntlet deck I've been playing for a while, and I think I've got it pretty much nailed down to the right list. We all of course recognize the whole
Horde Plunderer /
Ironfist Chancellor combo, but I've been working on finding
juusstt the right mix of combo pieces and generic goodstuff cards so that we wind up with a deck that has a consistent enough combo element, while also remaining an efficient aggro deck.
The deck typically wins between turn 6 and 8, and long board-stall games usually don't go past turn 10 before you completely overrun the opposing AI with an overwhelming board. But what I
really like about this deck, is that it's not only good at winning gauntlets efficiently, it's also super fun! I don't know about you, but I love paying 5 power, stunning a creature, drawing a card, cloning a 5/5 aegis flier, transforming a unit into a frog... oh ya and creating an extra 8/10 aegis endurance flier in the process!
Here's the card breakdown:
The Combo:
Ironfist Chancellor +
Horde Plunderer. Most matchups you're just trying to rush these 2 out asap and start going off. Usually a little trick I do is wait until turn 4 to play the chancellor, this way the AI will have either already used it's removal on your other guys, or prioritize removing your other units first since it only sees the chancellor as a harmless 2/2. Then on turn 5, play both the plunderer and a 2 cost weapon to get immediate value.
The Weapons:
4
Linebreaker's Shield. One of the main reasons to play this deck, buffs a unit, draws a card, huge tempo swing, breaks stuns.. this card does it all.
3
Vanquisher's Blade. Another fantastic 2-for-1 card, buffs a unit, kills a unit, and randomly hoses graveyards for some reason ...because apparently it wasn't already insane enough?
3
Changeestik.
Aanndd yet another 2-for-1, slightly more expensive and a smaller buff, but it gives both evasion and a silence effect, both crucial in good gauntlet decks imo. The fact that it transforms the unit means it will literally handle any annoying creature the AI will throw at you. Love having access to this in the market.
2
Copperhall Bracers. Busted card, brutally efficient as well. Smash through opposing boards, or slap it on a flier to have a huge clock which also ramps you. It may actually be correct to play 3 copies and 1 less
Changeestik, but I've been happy with 2.
And finally 2
Gleaming Shield. This card seals the deal, allowing your
Ironfist Chancellor to fullfill his maximum potential. It's also just super powerful on it's own copying a
Valkyrie Enforcer, rebuying aegis on
Shelterwing Rider, etc. It's a bit clunky so only 2 copies, but because it's the only 5 drop in the deck, it can be easily tutored for by
Whispering Wind.
Aggro/Midrange Threats:
Kothon, the Far-Watcher,
Kosul Battlemage,
Valkyrie Enforcer,
Shelterwing Rider. 4 of each. Efficient, evasive, hard to deal with, powerful. These units round out the deck and combined with your weapons will easily take most games for you in a timely manner. Also, I mentioned earlier how much I think silence is important in gauntlet, It's great against a lot of the boss matchups as well.
The Rest:
4
Whispering Wind and 4 Privledge of Rank. These cards give you much needed card advantage and deck manipulation. A lot of horde plunderer decks play
Herald's Song and other card filtering and echo cards, and while those are great at more consistently finding your combo, we are not necessarily trying to combo off every game. That being said, I found these 2 cards specifically to be by far the best 2 at bringing the deck together.
Privledge helps you keep curving out and gives you extra cards to toss away to the market, and also the extra power really helps when you don't have a
Horde Plunderer but you need to keep spellcrafting away. An unanswered turn-2
Whispering Wind will just quickly run away with the game every time.
The 3
Permafrost are pretty self-explanatory. Super efficient tempo-building removal.
The Market:
Banner - obvious
Horde Plunderer - of course
Changeestik - tutorable removal/silence/evasion
Linebreaker's Shield - so powerful, probably most tutored for card
Crystallize - occasionally, the AI will get an insane board, or a bunch of humbugs and obelisks before you were able to get up and running. Fortunately, that doesn't matter because
Crystallize is a totally fair and balanced card.
And that's everything! I've been crushing gauntlet with this list, hopefully you will too! And build yourself some insane Voltrons! I still haven't been able to get all 5 weapons on to one chancellor before the game ends, so if you manage to pull it off, let me know!
Struggles against all units have charge and all units have double damage, but those can be rough no matter which deck you play in my experience. Every other gauntlet boss has been cake.
I had a bit of trouble against token decks which play Humbug Swarm and Xenan Obelisk, which is why I added Crystallize to the market, so just plan ahead when playing against "rule the skies" and "strength in numbers".
If you're talking ranked, I haven't played this deck in ranked :)
