Like Drawin' Cards and Killin' Stuff? Well, I've Got a Deck For You
This deck is very much a Control shell. What makes this a homebrew, is that it literally is a brew from scratch. I was inspired by seeing a TJP Control brew in the expedition summer challenge. Looked like a fun deck. I looked to see of there was anything like that for Throne currently, and found hardly anything.
I like homebrews because they're sometimes better simply because they're unique and unpredictable. I like to find amazing cards that are rarely used. That's the best feeling. I've made people throw cards in rage quits against me, multiple times. Now this probably isn't "that" deck (yet), but hopefully after a small tweak or two - it will get there.
So... Without further ado,
Card Choices. Card Choices. CARD CHOICES!
I often see people using seek power in decks that use 3 color factions. I don't understand why anyone would do that unless they don't have the cards for it. Actually, that's mostly the reason this deck is using the Time faction. Both for
Tradition Chant, and for
Elysian Cylix. Having a seek power card that becomes a Decimate for a possible win-con or prayer in a pinch is awesome. I like cards that are versitle like that. And the Cylix, dropping a power card that has a chance to enter un-depleted, add two Influence AND gives you a
Treasure Trove! That's definitely a good feeling. And in my opinion, these were worth the Time faction splash.
The other time cards aren't very important.
Shen-Ra Speaksare basically there to act as additional copies of Harsh rule, because more are needed. I did a 2-3 (respectfully) split because I figured the Two Time/two Justice influence would sometimes be tough to get on a desperate turn 5.
The power card numbers are mostly about getting your removal and card draw played when needed. Though the 3
Primal Symbols are purely for
Helio, the Skywinder greed. And yes... Definitely worth it. Who doesn't like to drop a Helio in mid-game and draw 5+ cards? That card is insane.
But each card choice or absence has a reason. I made this deck for another particular reason. I've been enjoying
Wasteland Broker A LOT. I think this card has really impacted the metagame. Also, I was tired of mulliganing, and drawing cards like
Savage Incursion and
Channel the Tempest in my opening hand. No one wants these early game. They are absolutely trash to the max, and snail slow in early game. So I've been messing around with just putting my slow win con cards in the market and jamming Wasteland Broker. It's awesome. Now you can turn 4 have a 4/4 blocker that just let you adjust 1/5 of your card draw to your own preference. Sweeeeeet.
There are other things you'll see missing like
Strategize. Honestly, it's just a card that becomes another card. I'd rather be playing removal turn two than digging while being smacked. This deck is a bit more proactive and different. But that's the point.
ThePetition in Market???
I'll admit, it's a bit weird. But sometimes you're just power screwed and want to get specifics early game. This will help smooth out the rest if the game if It's not going smooth so far. Generally, you want to Wasteland Broker the cheaper cost to the higher cost, but Petition is really just there as a buffer in case I need to drop Broker in a pinch for a blocker and don't want to draw a bunch of 9 cost win cons when I have 5-6 power.
Though, with all the added bulk missing from the deck, it does allow you a more good removal package, and a slew of it. You're really able to shut down decks and
Turn to Seed /
Avigraft stuff.
Tradeoffs
Obviously control decks are a bit slow. Having most power cards coming in depleted doesn't help. Also, in most control decks, I generally add a
Lightning Storm (or 4...for gauntlet BS). I opted not to have that here. Many people are playing market grab cards with big butts in throne.
Cards to Worry About
- Eremot,[the Gathering Dark/card]
-
Azindel's Gift
-
Scourge of Frosthome
- *Others 😂
Don't know if you noticed, but the deck doesn't have much Aegis. I didn't want to worry about that when decks just overpower you with beaters when you're over there worrying about aegis and curses. So, the deck is strong against beats and has an Achilles heel for curses, mill and cardsteal. Basically no aegis means anything that comes at your face will land. This card game doesn't have a lot of remove anything cards like MtG does. So I opted to not worry about Relics in case my relic removal was dead hand space... Can't have Every thing..
If you wanted to make some tweaks, to be better prepared with face protection, a couple
Transpose,
Eilyn's Favor or
Cobalt Waystone could be added for like cards from the deck.
Market win cons could be adjusted too. But I recommend jamming 4 Helios in the deck in any way.
There's a lot more I could say. I'm new-ish to the game so recommendations are appreciated. I'm still learning the cards. But that's about the gist of this deck.
As a newer player, you might not be caught up on all the campaigns yet, but a decent form of relic hate that also hoses aggro nicely is Sabertooth Prideleader. I also wonder if Ice Bolt can't be replaced, it's nice to have the efficient removal but the sigil downside is pretty relevant in a world with the Rakano justice payoffs. Maybe Equivocate?
This deck seems like a breath of fresh air from all the usual Throne decks. Thanks for sharing!
I know exactly what you mean about Ice Bolt. Exactly! Every time I use it I'm like, "Ugh, contributing to their deck thinning..." . you use it to clear the board, only to ramp them AND thin their deck.
But I have been using Ice Bolt for quite a while now. It reminds me of Path to Exile in Magoc the Gathering, if you've ever played that game. And that card is a staple there, as I think I've Bolt is here. The thing is, it's strength outweighs the small boost you give the opponent.
Also, I often don't use it for that reason. I try to use the other (ample) removal first. In most games it just remains a "use only if needed" dead card in hand, and after gaining so much card advantage, I don't mind that. There are targets that Ice Bolt doesn't work well for. But their are other targets that SCREAM "ICE BOLT IT NOW!" Like a Severin of the Dark after you've used all your turn to seed.
I've tried other cards like the new Just Desserts, and the issue is often that they simply AREN'T Ice Bolt.
You are very right about Saber-Tooth Prideleader. That is a card I had no idea about. That might be THE answer and final piece I was looking for. It's not great if it not hitting a relic. But it is something otherwise. And sometimes, just a body and 3 health is nice. Downside is this deck is based on mostly being unitless in order to make all their unit hate dead in hand. That's where most of the edge you get comes from. Wasteland Brokers and Helio, the Skywinder are expected to die instantly like Tom Cruise hitting the beach in Edge of Tomorrow. Definitely though, I will do that campaign next for that card.
Thanks so much for the suggestions!
I actually had built this deck. Then I read a list that was basically Rakano splashed with shadow for Backbreaker. I was thinking "yikes!" about that card.
But at the same time I was thinking HOW? Are these decks consistent with getting their shadow sources? Even with their mainboard Petitions?
This uses Clan Standard as a main way to kill off smaller relic weapons. Desert Alchemist was put in with relic weapons in mind. It's definitely not going to do much to one though.
My own Stormhalt Knife is another answer in a way.
Basically, my thinking is the decks running Backbreaker aren't going to be able to play the card advantage game with me in mid to late game. So dealing with Backbreaker is about tempo. It is a difficult thing to deal with, but I worry if I change this deck to deal with that specifically, then it changes the consistency of, well - this deck.
BHV just recommended Saber-Tooth Prideleader. And that might actually be THE answer I'm looking for.
