May 25 Update:
Ascetic Lantern +1 cost, +1 toughness.
Twilight Lantern: -1 Power +1 Toughness.
This deck and Stonescar Midrange have been dominating the ladder, and our time may be at an end...
Ascetic Lantern may still have a place in certain lists due to its fairly unique functionality of allowing a discard, but it is vastly diminished as an aggro/hand fixer card.
The Twilight Lantern nerf feels way worse, but it was admittedly way too powerful for a common card.
for the June season, I will likely switch to something involving the broken
Riftfeeder Wasp and/or Raniya, Miviox Maniac, OR return to Feln
Kelmak's Spear, as those seem to be the most broken cards in the format as we move forward.
May Update: Achieved Master again this month on May 11th (67th place), with no changes to the deck! I feel like it still has the same raw power, and can snowball quickly. The uptick in Stonescar decks as well as FTS decks has led to increased instance of
Raniya, Miviox Maniac, which is usually a loss if we leave units up, but sometimes it's unavoidable and we "take the L." Grind on, fellow Red players, do not be deceived or disheartened by a few losses in a row.
Highlights:
--The deck can kill as quickly as turn 4, and consistently kills by turn 5-6 with proper draws and mulligans.
--The deck plays Ascetic Lantern, a pretty broken yet skill-intensive card that allows you to fix weak hands and requires blockers or fast removal to deal with. This card is the
Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer (bane of MTG Modern) of the format, and is in some ways a superior design concept.
--The deck can have explosive turns, doing 10-16 damage with only 4 power and a single unblocked unit.
--The deck is new or returning player friendly, as it is fairly straightforward to play and has a low dust cost with only 4 legendaries.
Deck Construction
Credit for creating this deck goes to RedGoesFace, who provided a useful and accurate card-for-card analysis in
this list.
At their suggestion I removed
Ossuar Longbow from the list and added a 3rd copy of
Rampage, which was often more relevant. While climbing, I often asked myself if I'd rather have the Rampage I drew (or saw in my opener) or Longbow, and most often the answer was Rampage.
