Intro
Control in Expedition is in a difficult spot right now - the meta is full of very efficient, aggressive, board based decks like Vulk Sentinels (e.g.
FTJ Sentinel Aggro) or Soldier Amplify (e.g.
TJP Soldiers [Rank 1 Expedition Clickbait]) and the only playable board clear at our disposal is
Equalize. So we have to rely on a lot of single target removal which is usually bad, since only doing 1-for-1s while being the reactive deck does put you in a tight spot most of the time. But more on that in the next section.
Card choices
Bring to Justice While this card isn't easy to activate at 3J and requiring you to have face Aegis, it is a very strong and tempo efficient single target removal. The deck has 12 ways to generate face Aegis and an influence base slightly tilted towards Justice with 4
Justice Symbols.
Transpose Aniyah, Master Sleuth Duelist's Blade The face Aegis generators of the deck. We play Aniyah over
Eilyn's Favor because she also offers a decent blocker and sticky face Aegis, which makes it very hard for our opponent to pop face Aegis as a reaction to casting
Bring to Justice.
The recent addition of Duelist's Blade to Expedition offers another way to generate face Aegis. It is also a strong control tool, acting as removal or a possible finisher.
Smite Eilyn's Choice The conditional single target removals of the deck. Together they should cover a wide range of units in the format. Eilyn's Choice is especially flexible as it also acts as an counterspell and is a welcome addition from the latest patch.
Vicious Overgrowth This removal is very flexible as it can kill most early drops, relic weapons and some sites like
The Speaking Circle. And don't underestimate the reach of 2-3 of these to finish your opponent off after you hit him a few times with
Evolving Olzial ;-)
Dazzle Strong card in any Primal deck, especially important in this one to protect
Equalize. Depending on the matchup you might want to hold it to disrupt key cards of your opponent's deck or just to slow down big hitters until you play your board clears.
Equalize The most important card in the deck. Careful planning and preparation are important before casting this. Usually, we need to be very greedy and get maximum effect out of every copy since this is our only real comeback mechanic. Be aware of the disruptions your opponent might use like
Dazzle or
Curtain Call and have your own Dazzle ready if you suspect him to hold those cards. Don't forget that if your opponent has
The Queen of Glass on the board, she will be the only creature that gets sacrificed. Sometimes of course, you will need to just cast this as a single target removal.
Wisdom of the Elders Just solid card draw. It is important to gain card advantage.
Evolving Olzial This card might seem odd at first, but it provides a lot of things for the deck. It deals with any problematic Site or Relic, can block twice, can help you search the deck for answers and also is a strong attacker on its own. Be aware though, that it is unable to handle
Sling of the Chi, since it doesn't actually kill Sites/Relics but transforms them. On the other hand though, it is worth mentioning that due to this fact it can "kill"
Massive Greatsword. Unfortunately, it sometimes gets easily killed by cards like
Flash Fry.
The Speaking Circle This card can catch you nearly anything, even more
Equalizes :-D
Massive Greatsword Another great finisher.
Power
Really nothing special here.
Justice Symbols are very important due to
Bring to Justice,
Aniyah, Master Sleuth and
Equalize and we play a full set of
Clan Standard to have even more removal in this aggressive meta and some protection against relic weapons.
Market
The Market in this deck is just some utility and disruption.
Replication Cell on Olzial or Queen is strong in drawn out games, especially since it will be protected by face Aegis most of the time. The latest patch gave us
Avigraft, which can shut down problematic cards, just like
Rain of Frogs and
Citywide Ban.
Reverberating Strike is in there to deal with token strategies like Grenadin decks, since
Assembly Line is in the format now.
Final words
The deck is working quite well in top 200 Master currently:
